Veterans in Agriculture

Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be tough, especially for veterans coping with PTSD or other effects of deployment. Many are drawn to farming for its sense of purpose, independence, and community.

Because more than 1 million farmers are now older than 65, training new farmers to enter the agriculture sector is critical for the future of our food system. Military veterans are answering the call. But beginning farmers need help to succeed. At last count, more than 70,300 military veterans have been farming or ranching for less than 10 years. We help beginning farmer veterans thrive and stay in farming by providing veteran-specific sustainable agriculture training programs and long term support and technical assistance.

Our Initiatives

Armed to Farm
Veteran-specific training programs support veterans on their farming journey. A weeklong training that features farm tours and hands-on activities. Participants learn from seasoned farmers and gain direct experience on livestock, vegetable, fruit, and agritourism operations.

Armed to Farm Stories: Sara Creech

Army veteran Sara Creech tells how organic farming helped her overcome trauma and loss. Attending NCAT’s Armed to Farm program in 2013, Sara says, empowered her not only to pursue farming herself but also to help other farmer veterans.

From the Farmers

“We don’t just have classroom time. We leave the classroom and go to farms of veterans who are walking the walk and that is powerful.”

- Lawrence Rhone, Montana Armed to Farm alum
