The goal of the internship is to enable a person to manage and maintain a production farm. The ideal candidate will have a desire to run a farm or homestead in their future. At a minimum, the intern will have a strong work ethic, commitment to local food production, and believe in changing the food system through sustainable farming.
The internship will cover the following areas:

This includes learning general animal husbandry, animal nutrition, feeding, watering, housing/feeder/waterer construction & maintenance, manure and offal composting, egg production, nutrient management, parasite control methods, breedstock selection, breeding, farrowing (birthing) baby pigs, rotational grazing, forage/cover cropping, fencing, USDA and WSDA processing of hogs and birds, on-farm slaughter and butchery.
Farm Products Direct Marketing: On and off farm sales, CSA, farm product group buys, farmer’s markets, restaurant sales. Online media and online sales, packing orders, and maintaining inventory.
Vegetable garden: Learn to grow a market garden with sales to farmers markets, CSA, and online. Approximately one acre of production upcoming for season in 2026. Many varieties of vegetables in production. Compost utilization techniques, weed control, water management through drip line irrigation, and many other aspects to vegetable production.
Other learning opportunities include legal aspects of farming and selling food (rules and regulations), general farm business management and accounting, cold storage, construction projects (structural and timber framing/concrete/etc), logging/firewood, food preservation, soap making, and an array of sustainable living concepts taking place at the farm.
For a perspective on the size of Hogstead regarding the head of livestock seasonally on farm through the production season include approximately 30 breeding hogs, 120+/- butcher hogs, 400 laying hens, 600 meat chickens, a few cattle, and 30 turkeys. Up to 1 acre of vegetable production. Hogstead attends up to 6 Farmers markets per week seasonally.
Prior livestock management experience is not mandatory for a new farmer, as the owner will provide direct guidance on all techniques. Owner has 15 years raising livestock in the Puget Sound region, and a lifetime of experience with livestock and farming. Serious work ethic is required, as farming is fulfilling yet demanding job.
