Internship information
General Farm Description: SMIP Ranch Produce is a diverse 3-acre farm which practices sustainable, organic methods of growing mixed vegetables and flowers. SMIP is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains about 40 miles South of San Francisco and 50 miles North of Santa Cruz (about 20 minutes from Alice’s restaurant). The farm grows produce for several bay area restaurants including two which have earned Michelin stars, and a small CSA. The ranch is nestled into the redwoods with beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills and Pacific Ocean as well as a large spring fed pond to swim and fish in that also serves to irrigate our fields solely by gravity.CRAFT Member Farm? This is one of three full-time positions at SMIP beginning in April through the end of November. Additionally, part-time and possibly full-time work will be needed in January and February, dependent on the winter season. The position is a great opportunity to grow produce on a working production farm, and to work with our customers directly – the chefs and CSA members who purchase our product. Duties include but are not limited to assisting with the CSA program, harvesting, irrigation set-up and maintenance, direct seeding, watering, weeding, pest control, soil amendment and fertility, hoop house propagation, transplanting, washing and packing of produce, delivery, farm maintenance, possible tractor work, chicken duties (egg collection, watering and feeding chickens, moving chicken tractor, and cleaning).
Educational Opportunities: Working side-by-side along the farm manager is an excellent opportunity to learn the workings of our small scale, diversified vegetable and flower operation. We implement many agroecological and regenerative practices to produce delicious produce while caring for the land.
Skills Desired: • Experience working on a farm (or other relevant experience) • Available to work 45-55 hours per week; peak season will require more hours per week and winter will require less • CA Drivers License and good driving record for delivery • Will require some evening work and partial weekend work • Tractor experience or willingness to learn a plus • Dependable and passionate about farming • Due to remoteness of farm, having a personal vehicle is usually necessary
