General Farm Description: Slow Farm (https://slowfarmorganic.com) is a certified organic U-pick farm devoted to the principles of Slow Food, agroecology, and justice in the food system. Slow Farm’s 187 acres are located in SE Michigan, 3 miles north of Ann Arbor, and includes woods, native prairie and wetlands. We grow approximately 20 acres of mainly heirloom produce and flowers, and provide an organic farm experience demonstrating biodiversity and “closed loop” practices. Farm Mission: The mission of Slow Farm is to create a welcoming, fun, and beautiful place where everyone can experience our organic farm and pick heirloom foods and flowers grown with love (and compost) on land we care for and from which we make our living.CRAFT Member Farm? Internship Details:
Slow Farm’s Leadership Team is looking for several Farmhand farm assistants. Farmhands support and manage daily routines and tasks of operating the farm; for example planting, weeding, managing pests, harvesting, staffing the farmstand, serving customers, operating tools, wholesale distribution, building infrastructure, etc.
Educational Opportunities: '- Organic crop production (asparagus, strawberries, heirloom tomatoes and peppers, flowers, raspberries, squash and pumpkins, beans, sweet corn, other garden vegetables) - Vermicomposting - Farmstand management - Upick and wholesale operations - Wash/pack for distribution - Livestock management (chickens and bees) - Enterprise budgeting - Data management
Skills Desired: REQUIREMENTS - Positive attitude and passion for sustainable agriculture. - Must be on time, well rested, well fed, and in good health for each shift. - Practice the highest standards of food safety and organic requirements. - Demonstrate focus on accomplishing assigned tasks. - Must be a team player and have the ability to take initiative balanced with the ability to take direction. Must also have the humility to ask for help or clarification when needed. Ideally 30-40 hours/week and able to work weekends.2 week probation/training period. QUALIFICATIONS - Over age 16. No school sports commitments before or after work on work days. - Prior farming or gardening experience with two or more recommendations. - Ability to routinely do challenging physical work - such as weeding in high temperatures for several hours or lifting 50 pounds repeatedly.
Meals: No meals, but produce from the farm.
Stipend: $9-$12/hour
Housing: No.
