Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a small diversified farm in midcoast Maine raising mixed vegetables, dry beans and dry corn, and pastured poultry. We are applying for our organic certification this season.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: mid May
Internship Ends: mid October
Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: none
Minimum Length of Stay: 4 months
Internship Details:
We are looking for an individual to work with us for a 4 hour shift in the mornings Monday through Friday. The majority of the work will be with the vegetables—planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and washing. There will be opportunities to work with the dry beans, especially in the harvest and post harvest handling of the crop. There will also be opportunities to work with the poultry, especially on daily care of the animals.
Educational Opportunities: You will be working alongside the farm owners who are happy to teach while working. We are in the process of setting up our vegetable fields in permanent, reduced tillage beds, so there is an opportunity to see this happen from the start. The Maine Organic Farmer and Gardener's Association (MOFGA) is a wonderful local and statewide resource for workshops and and other learning opportunities. We are located about 10 minutes away from their headquarters, and workshops happen there and all over the state.
Skills Desired: You must be accustomed to and enjoy physical labor and be able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions. Previous farming experience is not required but welcomed. It is very helpful to have an interest in small scale crop production, to be able to give your attention to the daily details of taking care of plants, and to enjoy working in the soil!
Meals: No but applicants have access to lots of fresh farm produce and other staples!
Stipend: Yes, dependent on experience.
Housing: Dependent on need of applicant.
Preferred method of Contact: phone or email
