General Farm Description: Carnation Farms is a stunning 818-acre organic, non-profit farm located in rural Snoqualmie Valley, roughly a half-hour east of Seattle. The historical home of Carnation Evaporated Milk, the farm now functions to provide the community with sustainable food, from farmer's markets, CSA, our farmstand, and culinary events. As a non-profit, Carnation Farms generates revenue to fund the Mentorship program primarily through the sales of our farm products, donations, and fees from events that take place on our farm.

Internship Details:

Farmers-in-Training works primarily in our certified organic garden and with farm livestock. Produce + proteins are distributed to our culinary department, to our CSA, sold on-site in our Farmstand, and off-site at farmers’ markets, food hubs, restaurants, and local food access organizations and food banks. The farm is a resource for farm-based educational programs. Farming techniques demonstrate sustainable soil management and careful water use and support beneficial insects and pollinators, local bird populations, and wildlife habitats. Our livestock is pasture-based and rotated regularly on our fields. We practice the highest animal ethics and livestock treatment.

Farmers-in-Training learn all aspects of running a market farm including basic accounting, time management, customer interaction to generate sales, food safety, and includes livestock and poultry processing.

This program often has opportunities for field trips to other farms, and learning skills such as beekeeping, wine-making and more. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for anyone interested in farming!

Educational Opportunities: • Soils – soil physical properties, soil health, soil fertility management in organic practices, cover crops, tillage, crop rotation • Field production – plant propagation, greenhouse techniques, variety selection, crop planning, projecting yields, bed preparation, irrigation and water management, flood mitigation • Pest and disease management – identification and management of invertebrate and anthropod pests, plant pathogens, predator control • Farm equipment – farm vehicle and implement mechanics, maintenance and repair. Safe operation of equipment, tractors, farm vehicles, and implements. • Food safety – harvest and post-harvest handling and storage • Ecological sustainability – wildlife and pollinator habitat improvement and protection • Livestock production and management; poultry processing, including live animal butchery. Programs in the past have also gotten to learn beekeeping and wine-making.

Skills Desired: Some experience working on a farm; a genuine curiosity to learn more about sustainable agriculture Consistent attention to detail and positive attitude Ability to stay organized while juggling multiple projects simultaneously Be able to take direction and ask for clarification if needed Must adhere to safety protocols at all times Ability to work hard; standing, sitting, bending over or kneeling: to lift, push and pull heavy objects, up to 50lbs Ability to thrive under challenging conditions and be flexible and respond to changes that arise due to schedule change or adverse weather conditions Self-motivated; able to meet goals independently An ability to work as a team player A passion for food, outdoor education, and healthy eating A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions Ability to lift 50 pounds Flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor
