General Farm Description: Arthur Morgan School is a a unique boarding and day school that works with middle schoolers in grades 7-9. We grow over fifty varieties of vegetables, herbs and fruit using low-input and organic methods on an acre of land. Internship Details:
We are looking for an intern from early spring to late summer. We will also consider applications for the partial season, either early March to mid-May or mid-May to late August.
Depending on the week, interns have the opportunity to work closely with the AMS students, the Farm Coordinator, or on their own. Primary tasks include daily chores with the livestock, prepping beds, transplanting/planting, trellising, weeding, hilling and mowing. From the beginning of April to mid-May, the intern would be invited to assist teaching a science course for 2-4 students based on the work of the farm. Interns would also be encouraged to spend time working at other farms in the neighborhood to build community and get a sense of the diversity
of farming methods being practiced here. Interns are also welcome to participate in the life of the school as much or as little as they wish.
The internship consists of 30 hours of labor a week, 6 hours a day Monday-Friday. There are occasional weekend duties when the farm coordinator is out of town. While school is in session, the intern would receive 1-2 meals a day through the school’s cafeteria (we meet a variety of
dietary restrictions). The intern also has access to garden produce and eggs. Any additional food needs can be purchased from the school’s kitchen at bulk prices. The internship stipend is $50/week. Housing options vary from rustic cabins to a room in a house shared with other staff
members.
Some experience is desired; enthusiasm and willingness to learn, to work independently and to work hard outdoors is a must. We expect open communication, lots of questions, and a positive attitude! No pets, please.
Educational Opportunities: Interns will have the opportunity to connect with nearby farms to learn about the diversity of farming practices in the area.
