Internship information
General Farm Description: Liberty Farms is a NOFA NY-certified organic farm situated in New York's picturesque Hudson Valley. We are a diversified farm on over 600+ acres, with about 12 acres dedicated to our organic vegetable and flower garden. Elsewhere on the farm we board horses, raise livestock, host weddings and other events, and have a ten-tent glampsite. We sell our produce, meat, eggs, and cut blooms at several local and NYC farmers markets, plus a growing CSA and several wholesale outlets including local restaurants and catering companies.CRAFT Member Farm? Internship Details:
The Garden Crew internship position is a wonderful opportunity for someone interested in learning about all of the different aspects of running a small organic vegetable farm, from seeding to sales.
Under the direction of the Vegetable and Garden Manager and Assistant Garden Manager, Garden Crew Interns will seed, plant, and cultivate crops while learning about the organic production of vegetables, mushrooms, and flowers. Your primary responsibilities will include harvesting, washing, and packing vegetables, mushrooms, and flowers for our weekly CSA and markets alongside the Managers and a team of fellow Crewmembers and Interns. You will also interact with our customer base and learn about the distribution of all our food and flowers by chipping in with CSA delivery runs and learning to help run our various farmers market stands, including those in NYC.
Although a season or two of experience in commercial organic or biodynamic vegetable growing is awesome, we encourage farmers of all experience levels to apply and will be very happy to train even those who are brand new to the profession.
Other skills greatly appreciated include:
• An interest in and an enthusiasm for learning more about organic vegetable growing practices.
• Excellent listening, critical thinking, and communication skills.
• A strong work ethic and the ability to work well with others – a sense of humor is always helpful!
• The ability to lift 50 lbs.
• A willingness to sometimes drive farm delivery vehicles to, from, and within NYC.
• Because we are in a rural area with no public transportation, a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle are required.
• Spanish speaking is a plus.
The position is open from May through October 2023, although you have the opportunity to join us whenever – and for however long – you choose. Plan on about 45 hrs of work each week including some weekend hours sometimes to help cover farmers market days. Compensation is $15.00/hour, plus a bounty of organic vegetables and eggs. Housing can also be made available if needed – please mention your needs in your application.
To apply, please send your resume and a brief cover letter to sales@libertyfarmsny.com.
Educational Opportunities: The entire internship experience is an educational opportunity! This internship gives you the chance to grow and learn alongside master gardeners with years of experience. Furthermore, working in a rural/agricultural area of New York affords you the opportunity to visit many other local farms, including vegetable and/or flower farms, dairy farms, etc., should you be interested in exploring other types and techniques of farming during your tenure with us - and we can help lead you in the right direction!
Skills Desired: Not necessarily! Any skills and experience levels welcome, we will teach you what you need to know if you are brand new to farming.
Meals: While full meals are not provided, in addition to monetary compensation, all farm staff including interns are entitled to all the organic vegetables you can handle and a weekly stipend of farm fresh organic eggs.
Stipend: Yes, we offer $15/hour to interns.
Housing: Yes, if needed.
