Internship information
General Farm Description: Old Copper Farm is located on beautiful Shaw Island in the heart of the San Juan Islands of Washington State. We are a small, family run, sustainability-oriented farm growing organic vegetables for our local market. We sell vegetables via our CSA program, our farm stand, and to the Orcas Food Co-op and San Juan Island Food Co-op. Our farm has about one acre under intensive vegetable cultivation. We grow a full selection of vegetables and try new things every season. There is a small orchard that includes some of the original heritage fruit trees and some we planted. We also keep a flock of 30-50 laying hens and sell eggs at our roadside stand.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Interns will have an opportunity to engage in all aspects of running a small organic farm. This will include starting plants, preparing soil, transplanting, installing drip irrigation, garden maintenance such as weeding, harvesting, pest management, and fertilization, packing and distributing CSA boxes, running the farm stand, and more. We will work alongside farm interns for the whole season. There will be plenty of on the job learning opportunities. We will also provide some classroom style learning sessions for concepts that are better taught that way. Interns are expected to work five days per week, 4-6 hours a day. If you are thinking about starting your own farm, would like to get some farming experience, or just want to spend the summer working outside in a beautiful, quite environment, our farm internship program is a perfect option.
Educational Opportunities: Beyond daily hands on learning, additional opportunities on topics such as small engine repair, soil science, composting, and chicken raising for eggs and meat will be available.
Skills Desired: Farming experience is not required but willingness to learn and work hard is. Interns must have a vehicle with insurance and be able to comfortably lift 50 lbs.
Meals: Interns are responsible for preparing their own meals. Basic kitchen staples and as many vegetables as you can eat are provided. We will also arrange some shared meals.
Stipend: No
Housing: Housing and utilities are provided. Intern housing on the farm is rustic but comfortable. Interns have their own space in either the cabin or summer wall tent.
