General Farm Description: We are an organic, family-run produce farm serving Seattle and Bainbridge Island markets since 1991. Our educational internships are fully integrated with the business and community of our farm—and provide an immersive and fulfilling experience of everything it takes to run a sustainable commercial farm.

Internship Details:

We have two  internship positions available. The work week is Tuesday-Saturday or Monday-Friday, 8 hrs/day. Our farm is a small, five-acre property in the beautiful Pacific Northwest—very close to Seattle. We have been dedicated stewards of sustainable agriculture for over 20 years and have a deep love for what we do.

Our annual internships are opportunities to seed the knowledge and passion we have for this business into the future generation of farmers and consumers alike. Our intern program is woven deeply into what we do—as both a community and as a business. It offers a comprehensive and immersive experience of what goes into local food systems and conscientious agriculture in the modern era. As such, the positions come with tangible daily responsibilities and are designed for people who will take initiative in this exceptionally rewarding work environment.

We encourage our interns to form strong community bonds between themselves as well as with other farm and food workers in this area. Outside of the  work week, this part of the Puget Sound area is ripe for hiking, camping, kayaking, eating, and exploring—we are also very close to several large cities and within walking/biking distance of Poulsbo, the nearest town.

Most of our business is direct-to-consumer at weekly farmers markets nearby and in Seattle. We also sell wholesale to several restaurants and local grocery stores. Working the markets and delivering orders of fresh produce are both great opportunities to see how grateful and supportive people are of the hard work we do.

In its own right, farm work is mentally and physically stimulating. Figuring out plant behavior is a daily exercise in scientific thinking and the physical work is always invigorating. And every day brings something new—from planting tomatoes, to moving greenhouses, to weeding carrots in the morning while we drink our coffee.

Educational Opportunities: All of our instruction is done in the field, and education is always hands-on. Because we don’t use lectures or teach from a book, your curiosity always takes center stage and we are really looking for people who want to ask questions. Throughout the year, we delve into farming essentials (seeding, transplanting, compost and soil nutrition). We teach harvesting and packaging procedures for a wide range of vegetables from snap peas to salad mix. There also are opportunities to learn beekeeping, tractor operation, equipment maintenance, and irrigation skills.

Skills Desired: Previous work on a farm is not necessary for this position. Much more important is a positive and enthusiastic attitude! A willingness to jump into the day is one of the key attributes we are looking for. A sense of humor is another essential skill! Rainy weather and flat tires are all a part of farm work—so strong overall resiliency is essential. Organizational skills and time management are also traits we look for.
