General Farm Description: Cosmos Farm is a Certified Naturally Grown farm that grows a large variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, and shiitake mushrooms on 7 cultivated acres on a 30 acre property in Carrollton, GA. The owner and manager, John, started the farm 15 years ago in Atlanta and has expanded to more acreage in Carrollton, where we've been since 2015. We have been serving farmers markets, CSA, and restaurants in and around the Atlanta area for the last 15 years. We now focus completely on being a market farm, selling at two farmers markets per week in Atlanta. The nearby town of Carrollton is a beautiful, medium sized town with all amenities one would desire, including a walking and biking path that encircles the entire town.

Internship Details:

We are looking for people who are eager to work hard, open to learn, and positive in their attitude and communication. They should have the willingness to work in all kinds of uncomfortable (and sometimes comfortable) weather conditions (intense heat/cold/wet). The work is extremely physically demanding and quite hard over the long season, so good physical and mental fitness is necessary.

Apprentices should be able to listen, follow instructions quickly and successfully, and be interested in how their role and even smallest task fits into the entire picture of the working farm. We want people who are looking to continue to hone their farming skills, but also who are interested in seeing and participating in what it takes to run a small scale sustainable farm. An apprentice must be able to do this while persevering through tough and repetitive farm labor.

Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly is necessary. At least one year experience working on an organic farm is preferred but we are also open to people who are simply eager to learn about farming, are positive in the face of exhaustion, and who can work hard. WE ARE LOOKING FOR POSITIVE TEAM PLAYERS THAT CAN GET ALONG WITH EVERYONE, WORK HARD, AND HAVE FUN DOING SO. Apprentices who complete a season should leave the farm feeling confident in their ability to produce a diverse array of vegetables, mushrooms, herbs, and flowers from seed to sales on a small sustainable farm scale. This is learned mostly by being a part of all of these processes and by paying attention to how the farm runs and how it works. You will also have open access to the manager/owner most days to discuss questions and address problems. We are mostly looking for people who want to be farmers and can COMMITT to the season.

Apprentices can expect 4-5 days/week of field work and harvesting, depending on the season, and 1-2 days working a farmers market totaling about 40-45 hours/week during peak summer season and less on the perimeters of the season. The work is strenuous and can at times be monotonous and repetitive (as it is at any working farm). After a training period, apprentices can expect to be running 2 farmers markets on their own. Farmers market days are Thursdays and Sundays. Saturdays are typically the day off.

Apprentices receive an $1300/month stipend to start. Then $1400 starting in May, then up to $1500/month starting in June. Housing will be provided in a large, old two bedroom, two bathroom mobile home with a big eat-in kitchen, and living room. Everyone has their own bedroom and bathroom. The home is located on the property. All utilities and internet are included. Apprentices will also have access to some farm food when it is available and can sometimes barter for other foods at market.

**We have a very high retention rate and often have Apprentices stay more than one season. They sometimes also transition to full or part-time hourly positions.** We are very open and encouraging of this when there is a good fit for everyone!

Educational Opportunities: Apprentices will receive an intense learning/training experience where they are immersed in all aspects of farm production and life. They will learn about, participate in, or be responsible for: -Greenhouse growing and management -Planting/Harvesting/Weed control -Crop rotation -Cover cropping -Organic/Integrated pest management -Soil fertility -Post-Harvest handling and packaging -Tractor work -Irrigation -Farmers Markets

Skills Desired: We're looking for positive people who get along with others and who enjoy being outside doing physical work.

Meals: We do not provide meals, but apprentices are allotted some farm food for themselves as it becomes available.

Stipend: Yes, $1300 to start with increases through the season as outlined above.

Housing: Yes, housing is provided in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom mobile home. We provide internet and all utilities. Space heaters are used in colder months and window units are used in the bedrooms for a/c in the summer.
