Internship information
General Farm Description: Once In A Blue Moon Farm is a 35 acre historic property on the west side of Orcas Island. 20 acres are devoted to agriculture, including extensive perennial gardens, pasture and organic fruit orchards. Old and new stands of Apples, pears, plums, cherries, quince. We are a no kill farm. We keep chickens, ducks and geese for eggs and house a collection of rescue farm livestock: alpaca, sheep, goats and Rosie the KuneKune pig. During the summer we host farm stay guests in 5 vacation suites. The farm family includes Shana and daughter Sarah (business manager), son Zach (farm manager, all around builder, goose herder and landscaper), and third generation farmer, Zach's toddler son, Elliott.

Internship Details:

We welcome 1 or 2 interns to help us out with basic farm and garden chores.  This would include daily animal routines (feeding, mucking, cleaning the bird coop, washing eggs) and/or a variety of outdoor tasks as needed and based on the season.   There is always something to do rain or shine.   We understand you will want time to explore the island or may have a remote job, so will come up with a mutually agreeable schedule.


Educational Opportunities: Not officially. Of course we are happy to share our knowledge about living rural, life in the islands, farming, animals etc..

Skills Desired: We welcome people with all backgrounds. Please be able to do physical work and devote at least 5 hours to the job. Summer applicants, are you willing to help in agri-tourism? This is also part of farm work. Farm stand and farmers market, customer service and assistance cleaning the rentals.

Meals: No. We will share farm fruit and eggs with you.

Stipend: Depends. For skilled contributions above and beyond we can offer an hourly wage. This would be discussed after a successful trial period.

Housing: Yes. On the farm or our guest house nearby. Private 1 bedroom 1 bath, kitchen and laundry.
