Internship information
General Farm Description: Sweet Alyssum Farm is a cut flower farm on Vashon Island, WA. We farm with sustainable and organic practices. We currently have about 3/4 acre in cut flowers and 1/3 acre in hops, with an additional you-pick flower field. Sweet Alyssum Farm sells flowers to local florists, at a weekly farmers market, through a CSA subscription and for weddings and events. We have a seasonal campground on our property and also host small events and weddings on the farm. Chickens, sheep and a farm dog also live here. Our farm is located on Vashon Island - a beautiful rural island community with easy ferries to Seattle, Tacoma or the peninsula. The farm is walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores, bars and even the water. Cycling, mountain biking, hiking are all nearby.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: Apr-23
Internship Ends: Oct-23
Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Minimum Length of Stay: Full Season (7 months)
Internship Details:
Our farm crew intern typically works about 24 hours a week (3 days). Tasks include seed starting, transplanting, bed prep, weeding, mowing, weed whacking, harvesting, potential for delivery or farmers market shifts, and other ongoing seasonal farm jobs as needed. You’ll get a hand in all aspects of the farm and get to see our field transform throughout the season. Your experience, skills and interests will help determine the tasks you most often work on. We expect a commitment for the full season, and offer an end-of-season bonus. Many days are worked side-by-side with the farmer, but some days will be solo. The perk of the job is working outside, but our farm crew must be willing to work in cold, rain and mud as well as hot weather. We take breaks and switch up tasks throughout the day. Some tasks are hard and uncomfortable, but each season/day is different. Plenty of opportunity to ask questions, take on new responsibilities (sometimes with profit-sharing incentives) and learn – we want the farm season’s success to be a shared goal, with rewards for all of us.
Educational Opportunities: Working alongside the farmer most days, you'll learn farming tasks by doing, with in-the-field training. We are open about sharing skills and knowledge, so ask questions and learn through experience and conversation. This full season experience really does get your hands in all phases of the farm cycle, meaning you'll have a full understanding of the daily operations of a small scale flower farm.
Skills Desired: Farming experience is nice, thought not required. However applicants must show an enthusiasm for learning about and participating in sustainable agriculture, as well as physical fitness for the breadth of tasks, and a willingness to work in all weather conditions. Expect to work hard.
Meals: No, but we often have extra vegetables in the food garden to share, and eggs from the chickens.
Stipend: Yes! $18/per hour, with end of season bonus
Housing: Maybe, trailer/RV hookups are available
Preferred method of Contact: email
