General Farm Description: Blackbrook Farm is a Certified Organic family farm. We grow vegetables for a 70 member CSA, an online Farm Stand and local farm-to-table restaurants. We also raise pastured heritage breed hogs, a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle and organic broiler chickens. Our 140-acre farm is located 60 miles outside of the Twin Cities in Amery, Wis. As organic farmers, our practices include using cover crops, green manures, crop rotations, and animal manures. We never use chemical fertilizers, fungicides or pesticides. We believe strongly in building our soils for the generations to come.

Internship Details:

For the 2023 seasons we are looking for 1-2 part-time to full time employees to help with every aspect of our organic vegetable and livestock farm. We are looking for applicants who are motivated, energetic and have an eye for efficiency and quality. Your responsibilities would be in all areas of the farm and will include but are not limited to: greenhouse propagation, transplanting vegetables, cultivating, harvesting and packing vegetables, tending to the animals, tractor work(optional) and more. We need people who can work alone and in a group, are interested in gaining knowledge and learning our systems on the farm and get work done! We do have high expectations of our employees, and in return you are rewarded with a decent wage, food from the farm, good community and a degrees worth of education on how to farm organically. We encourage folks to apply who have a desire to farm on their own in the future.

This is a high paced production farm, so you learn by doing. If you are interested you can learn how to do a multitude of tasks on the tractor including cultivating, spreading, bed preparation and more. All employees will learn how to propagate plants, transplant, weed, harvest and pack vegetables, how to irrigate using drip and overhead, how to grow in high tunnels, and how to tend to pastured animals.

Educational Opportunities: The educational opportunities on this farm come from learning the day in and and day out of a small diversified vegetable farm. You will be encouraged to ask questions and will learn new things everyday. There are other small organic farms in our area that you can also visit to see other methods of farming.

Skills Desired: Skills Desired: Applicants for the farm crew positions do not need to have experience, although it is preferred and desired. We train new employees every year and are interested in employees who have a desire to work here for more than one year with added responsibility and pay. The primary skills required will be a strong work ethic and common sense. We need employees who want to learn by doing, are motivated and have enthusiasm and energy, have an ability to easily lift 40-50lbs and are physically able bodied. Manual labor skills will help but is not required, a strong mental state and ability to take constructive and positive criticism and an ability to work as a team are needed.

Meals: We will eat some lunches together as a crew throughout the week. Breakfast, some lunches and dinner are your responsibility ( if you are living on the farm) but we do provide all staples, veggies and meat. We do have a community kitchen that is heated and available for all employees to use at anytime for cooking and eating. Board is deducted $250/month (if living on the farm).

Stipend: We pay our employees hourly with base pay being $12-13/hour. More experience and farming knowledge will come with a pay increase.

Housing: We do have housing available on the farm. Rent will be taken out of your paycheck. Rent for a room is $350/month, this includes Wi-fi, showers, electricity, running water, heat, all amenities needed.
