Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a small multi-generational family farm located about 10 miles from the heart of Eugene. We have about 1 of our 4 acres under cultivation with vegetables, herbs, flowers, and berries. We also keep goats for dairy, chickens for eggs, and the occasional meat birds. We have a roadside farm stand that is open everyday. We will be going to one market on Saturdays and we harvest for CSA boxes once a week, as well as, a weekly Flower CSA. We use organic practices, but are not certified.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: 1-Apr
Internship Ends: 31-Oct
Number of Internship Available: 2
Application Deadline: until filled
Minimum Length of Stay: 7 months
Internship Details:
We are asking 25 hours a week of help on the farm. This will be 5 mornings a week Tuesday- Saturday with most afternoons off. Tasks will include seeding, field prep, weeding, harvesting, transplanting. goat milking, egg collecting, general animal care, cleaning animal beds, stocking the farm stand, and washing and packing produce. There will be times working together as well as independent work. We expect you to be motivated, hard working, honest, creative, take initiative, and have an interest in pursuing farming seriously on your own in the future.
We are a production farm and the field work is fast paced. We expect people to increase in efficiency as they gain competency in the job. Farm work is physically demanding in nature and you will spend lengths of time squatting, bending and pushing a wheelbarrow. We do not own a tractor so all of our compost/soil is moved by hand with shovel and wheelbarrow. You must also be comfortable lifting 50 lbs. repeatedly and pushing a fully loaded wheelbarrow. We spend a fair amount of time in direct sun and rain so you must be comfortable working in all weather conditions.
Educational Opportunities: The bulk of the work is with the animals and in the field. There is much to learn with these if you are receptive and interested. In your off time we have many homesteading skills that we are open to share with you including soap making, cheese making, preserving and canning, bread making, and more.
Skills Desired: We value experience in the food industry or previous knowledge/ work in gardening/farming.
Meals: We like to have a weekly communal meal, other than that meals are on your own.
Stipend: We offer $500 a month, a place to live, and fresh seasonal produce and flowers as they are available.
Housing: Yes. We have a 30 foot trailer with a 2 twin beds, shower, composting toilet, kitchenette with stovetop, sink, and fridge, and a little living space.
