General Farm Description: Perelandra consists of seventy-seven acres of open fields, meadows and woods in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Machaelle Wright, the founder has resided at Perelandra since 1973, and has done her research with her nature partner since 1976. Machaelle is a pioneer in nature research. She has dedicated her life to learning about nature from an entirely new perspective and to teaching what she has learned, so anyone may apply the results of her research to their lives. Perelandra is looking for a Garden Assistant!
This internationally recognized research garden is like no other. If you care about the environment, have a deep appreciation for nature, prefer to work outdoors, and have a good sense of humor, you might be just the person we’re looking for.
This is a year-round, long-term, well-paid position, 24-32 hours per week, Monday through Thursday.
You must enjoy working outdoors in all weather, including summer heat and winter cold. You must also have respect for – but no fear of – wildlife, including snakes, skunks, spiders, an occasional visiting black bear, possums, rogue squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, deer, hawks, bees and frogs.
Since this is a research garden, the assistant must be willing to listen attentively and follow instructions closely, with the understanding this is a different approach to working in nature. No formal gardening experience or special training is needed. We will provide instruction. But you must like to learn, have good reading and listening skills, know when to ask questions, maintain an organized workspace and follow schedules. It’s a plus if you are just as happy working alone as with others.
This job requires good health and the physical condition to comfortably and safely do strenuous work such as lift 50 lb bags and work in squatting and kneeling positions (because the garden is at ground level). You’ll be mulching, pruning, mowing, trimming, fertilizing, planting, caring for small ponds, repairing borders, weeding, maintaining garden tools and keeping them organized, cleaning and keeping our garden storage areas organized, keeping track of and ordering supplies, filling birdfeeders and birdbaths, and providing any other care the gardens may need throughout the year.
