Internship information
General Farm Description: Our farm is a small family farm located in small town in rural Tennessee. We raise grass-fed sheep for wool and meat, pastured poultry for eggs, dairy goats, and various vegetables and perennial fruits. We host interns from a nearby college from May to August but need extra help from March to May and from late August through October each year. We are very active in the local food community in the area and are involved in management of a local food network which includes a farmer's market and a wholesale food hub. We also work with the local elementary school on gardening projects. We enjoy preserving some of our harvest for the family and we also almost always have additional projects going on - construction, auto mechanics, fencing, beer brewing, bio-diesel, etc. We welcome interns who are interested in learning and are willing to put in a good days work. Please be aware that work on our farm is very physically demanding but also very rewarding.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Interns help with all aspects of our small diversified family farm. Spring involves sheep shearing, lambing and kidding, planting and milking. Summer involves garden care and maintenance as well as harvests; and regular animal care, movement, and health checks. Summer is also the time for cutting hay. Fall includes more planting and animal care as well as marketing of meat products. We are currently also expanding our grazing and garden areas so there is plenty of fencing happening. Interns are expected to help with farm related work and the care of crops and more animals and are welcome to help with additional projects in which they have interest. We expect interns to work 6-8 hours a day for 5 days a week. Interns also take on regular daily chore responsibilities.
Educational Opportunities: Care and maintenance of grass-fed sheep and goats, and pastured poultry. Vegetable gardening. Marketing local produce, meats, eggs, and milk. Cheese and yogurt making. Home canning and food processing. Various construction projects and fencing. Mechanics and processing of used vegetable oil for fuel.
Skills Desired: A strong work ethic and a willingness to try new things and to learn.
Meals: Meals will be provided in return for 5 days of work. Meals will be taken with our family during work hours or occasionally on one's own. Food will be provided.
Stipend: In return for work we provide room and board.
Housing: We have an Airstream Argosy Camper with running water and electricity which can house one person or a couple. We also welcome camping on our land for shorter term stays. We can work with your needs for transportation.
