General Farm Description: We are a multi species pasture based livestock farm in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Together, co-owners Nathan Layton and Patrick Ebner changed their lives, quit their industry jobs and started this farm to develop, refine and prove sustainable pasture based livestock farming practices. We were certified organic for many years and still retain all the key practices, we farm without synthetic chemicals, and all of our animals are raised outdoors in rotational pastures. We have an open opportunity starting Feb/ March and running to the end of November with the opportunity to extend through the winter. Highlights
Full emersion experience into livestock husbandry with an emphasis on pasture poultry operations
Approximately 25-30 Hours, 5-6 days per week in early spring and later in fall
Approximately 50 Hours, 6-7 days per week during main seasons
*All applicants must be able to physically complete the entire internship period of farm work with animals across varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Must be a highly respectable person, and show respect for others and should be able to communicate clearly with others. An apparent drive to hard work and self motivation is required.
*Must be 18+ and have a valid drivers license and health insurance
Compensation
Our goal is to help someone interested in agriculture learn the needed skill set to make their own success possible. Additionally, there is an included monthly stipend, on-site housing including all utilities and basic furnishings, 30% discount on meats, free weekly eggs, access to garden space
Description
Learn the full workings of a multi-species organic livestock farm. You will be completely immersed in farm activities, working closely with chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep, dogs and cats and some work with cattle. See first hand and learn how our method of responsible, sustainable animal husbandry is done.
You will carry out several farming and property management tasks weekly, often without direct supervision or direction after instruction. This will include but is not limited to: general feeding chores, maintaining brooders, moving laying hens in pasture and maintaining nesting and roosting areas, collecting and washing eggs, moving/ setting up livestock fencing, maintaining gardens, moving chicken tractors, chicken processing, handling pigs and sheep, learning and assisting with inventory management, retail farm sales, farmers market sales and much more. The primary focus of this internship is to teach as fully as possible an introduction to the means and methods of organic pastured poultry operations.
Our farm is open to the public through our farm store, everyone here is expected to be a representative of the farm and our values. You will take on shared duties of store coverage as well as assisting in moving finished product into stock and filling online orders and be representative for one of our weekly Saturday farmers markets.
Internship includes unique training opportunities in many trade skills including general construction, carpentry and woodworking, electrical wiring, plumbing, tree work, welding and other hands on skills.
Educational Opportunities: We are not affiliated with any accredited educational program. We offer education in our own agricultural practices and additional life skills.
Skills Desired: Applicant should have general familiarity with basic hand tools. Skills or traits we are looking for include perseverance, cheerfulness, respectfulness, curiosity
Meals: We provide some meat and eggs, a weekly trade allowance at farmers markets and access to garden space where you may grow some of your own produce.
Stipend: We have a scaled stipend based on season
Housing: Private studio apartment on the farm is provided. All utilities included.
