Internship information

General Farm Description: We are a small, farmstead type farm, located in the coast range of Oregon, certified organic since 1993. We raise cattle and hogs for sale to local customers and restaurants and maintain an acre of high bush blueberries for U-pick sales and our own consumption. We also raise a large portion of the food for our very small, multi-generational intentional community, including 1-2 milking cows. Our emphasis is on pasture based production, intensive rotational grazing and generating our fertility on site as much as possible. The farmers also work as organic inspectors and consultants and are experts in organic certification and compliance. One of the farmers is also an expert in fiber flax and is working to restart regional linen production in the pacific northwest. We also maintain a smaller property in western Washington, near Seattle, where we winter the herd. Both locations have fast internet, but the Oregon farm does not have cell service and is very isolated (1 hours drive to town).

Internship Details:

We want to help grow the next generation of organic farmers and ranchers!
Our internship, which is over 12 years in the making, includes theoretical and hands on experience in beef and dairy cattle production, including calving, fence repair and installation, halter training of young heifers, milking by hand and machine and the practical and theoretical aspects of intensive rotational grazing. Interns will also have a chance to learn annual seedling production, irrigation technology (drip and overhead) as well as small scale vegetable production using tractors, walk behind tillers and hand tools. We expect interns to work a minimum 30 hours/week and provide didactic lectures as well as a very well supplied library of agricultural titles. While we expect interns to work hard, we also strive to ensure that you get 2 days off a week.

Our internship comes highly recommended. Having both worked as interns in our youth, we are keenly aware that some internships can simply mean exploitation of the interns with little by way of education. This is not one of those internships.

The farmers, Garth and Angela, have worked in organic projects all over the world and bring both technical knowledge and first hand experience to our instruction. We have taken a hiatus in accepting interns for the last two years, due in part to Covid and recent life changes/moves. We are excited to bring interns back to the farm on a more limited scale than before. We are BIPOC and LBGTQ friendly, though we live in a very white, conservative, rural area. Hablamos español.

Please note that due to unforeseen issues (our cows did not get bred until fall 2021), we will not have any milking animals until Sept. 2022.

Educational Opportunities: We provide reading and video assignments using our own extensive agricultural library and the University of California CASFS video materials as resources. We also pay for interns to attend workshops put on by our local Cooperative Extension. In addition, we are both working organic inspectors and can provide guidance for interested parties into this career path.

Skills Desired: Comfort and experience working around large animals (horses, cows) is required. Some previous agricultural experience is a must. Applicants must be able to work independently and understand verbal and written instructions in English and/or Spanish.

Meals: Yes. We provide full board using production from the farm as well as purchased food. Most dinners are eaten with the farmers and one or more community members (not everyone farms here) and interns are expected to take a day on the weekly meal rotation. In addition, we encourage and instruct interns to try their hand at cooking with ingredients from the farm and experiment with cheese making, bread making, home butchery (in the fall) and otherwise taking advantage of the whole foods available to you. You will not go hungry here. Due to the nature of our diet, which leans toward using protein derived from the farm, we are unable to accommodate vegans or strict vegetarians.

Stipend: We offer weekly payment based on experience as well as a bonus for completion of the 6 months session. Additional income opportunities may include farm sitting for the farmers once you have been trained on our systems.

Housing: Yes. We provide a cabin with light and heating. Internet is available in the common spaces, but not in the cabins.
