Internship Details:
We are a family farm that grows chemical-free, heirloom produce and plant starts for the Peoria area. We also raise and process our own pastured chickens, and sell a number of different canned food items and organic, handmade soaps. We are offering all the farm education you can take in, all the farm fresh produce you can eat, home-cooked meals, and housing. We also offer commission-based pay, which could be lucrative if you have the right mindset. Hours and commission would be negotiable after your interview. Ideally, our apprentice(s) would be self-starters with a love to learn, a teachable spirit, and a hard work ethic. Sometimes we walk, sometimes we run. When we take days off, we intentionally rest. Our apprentice(s) need to be able to do all three. Prior experience in gardening or farming is not required as long as you are willing to learn and you sincerely have an interest in local, regenerative, sustainable farming. As was made so clear this year in supply chains, the world needs more farmers, and lots of them. Come farm with us! 🙂
Educational Opportunities: What you will learn: an overall theme of permaculture and stewarding the land, how to choose and buy seeds and plant starts, seed-starting methods(including greenhouse growing and seed-blocking, transplanting, watering methods, mulching and the importance of mulch, raised bed management, pest and disease management, basic pruning, harvesting, washing, and packing/labelling produce, marketing, merchandising, and all the skills required to start your own self-sufficient farm. We have been slowly shifting to focus heavily on perennials plants and tree crops(mostly fruit and nut trees), so we envision lots of propagation and planting this year to continue establishing our food forest and the underlying plant guilds. You will also learn how to raise chickens from day-old chicks to packaged ready-to-sell birds in the freezer. Rotational grazing, integrated pest management, predator control, animal husbandry, running a scalder and plucker, eviscerating, loose chicken wrangling, stewing hens versus broilers, and anything else you can possibly think of in regards to raising chickens. Soapmaking, waterbath and pressure canning, cooking from scratch, fermentation, and other homesteading skills can also be incorporated into the apprenticeship if desired.
Skills Desired: Ideally, our intern or interns would be self-starters with a love to learn, a teachable spirit, and a hard work ethic. We believe that growing food wasn't meant to be back-breaking or life-consuming work, but sometimes tedious tasks are what needs to be done, so we do whatever the situation calls for. Sometimes we walk, sometimes we run. When we take days off, we intentionally rest. Our apprentices need to be able to do all three. Prior experience in gardening or farming is not required as long as you are willing to learn and you sincerely have an interest in local, regenerative, sustainable farming. As was made so clear this year in supply chains, the world needs more farmers, and lots of them. Come work with us! :)
Meals: Home-cooked meals are available.
Stipend: As far as compensation, we are offering all the farm fresh produce you can eat, home-cooked meals, and housing. We have an extra bedroom on the main floor of our house that would be yours, but all other areas are shared. (Kitchen, bathroom, living room, laundry, etc.) All utilities, central air, and wifi included. We also offer commission-based pay, which could be lucrative if you have the right mindset. Hours and commission would be negotiable after your interview.
Housing: Yes. There's not much that can beat rolling out of bed and skipping the daily commute.
Preferred method of Contact: Phone or Email
