Internship Details:
Our interns play a key role in day-to-day farm maintenance of plants and equipment. You will learn about how our business is structured from the inside, having the chance to build skills in marketing, working with a team, and growing healthy plants and soils.
Activities for interns include: Starting plants from seed for outdoor fields; regular weeding and harvesting of crops; composting; farm-related construction activities and land clearing; water irrigation; interacting with customers during regular deliveries; and land, soil and new cropland preparation.
Educational Opportunities: Interns will get hands on experience working with a Certified Alaska Master Gardener in a small business setting. There are opportunities to interact directly with the Farm Bureau, Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Services, Alaska Food Policy Council, multiple Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and/or UAF Cooperative Extension Service. For military veterans, we can share resources and connect you with the USDA and Farmer Veteran Coalition. The agricultural industry in Homer and Alaska is welcoming and collaborative.
Skills Desired: We are looking for dedicated, hard-working individuals who are thorough and have an eye for detail. Past work experience in a farm setting is not required, but we prefer to work with people who have a long-term interest in agriculture and sustainability. Harvesting experience is a plus. Ability to lift 40 pounds, bend over and be on knees to weed, plus other strenuous physical labor in a variety of weather conditions is essential.
Meals: Most food is provided to prepare your own meals with regular potluck family style dining.
Stipend: We pay an "end of season" stipend to applicants that fulfill the entire term of their internship agreement.
Housing: Available shared housing options provided include (a) 2018 Keystone Hideout multi-bed camper trailer; (b) 1968 Frolic Travel Trailer; or (c) Cabela's Alaskan Guide Model Geodesic 8-Person Tent that includes cot, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag per person with option to bring own equipment, if desired. Farm owners have two English Springer Spaniel dogs who may be on the premises from time to time. Outhouse bathroom on site. Camp shower available (NEMO Helio portable pressure shower in privacy shelter). Laundry is off-site. Shared transportation is available for interns with a clean driving record.
