General Farm Description: Plume & Furrow is a small-scale cut flower farm and floral design studio specializing in full-service floral design for over 65 weddings per season. We grow a wide variety of annual and perennial cut flowers and foliage for use in our on-farm design studio. We are looking for a full-time Field Worker to round out our crew. Because we are a young farm with a small staff, this position takes on a large amount of responsibility and is essential to our flower farming operation. While Field Workers are exposed to many facets of the farm and wedding industries, this position is entirely dedicated to growing and maintaining a healthy cut flower garden. Top applicants are strong, motivated individuals with 1-2 seasons of previous farming experience and a desire to further their understanding of flower farming.

Internship Details:

Our work is physically and mentally demanding, in an outdoor setting. Physical labor includes seeding, watering, planting and weeding, prepping beds, digging trenches, moving soil, spraying compost tea, harvesting product, washing buckets and much more. Field workers work 5 days a week, from sunrise to mid-afternoon, for about 8-10 hours per workday. In the high heat of the summer, “siesta hours” may be in effect, and farmers may work from sunrise until early afternoon, and then again in the evening. Daily work hours vary depending on weather, heat, and circumstance. Farmers must be flexible, efficient multi-taskers, with a passion for learning and growing.

Educational Opportunities: Field Workers have a hand in almost all aspects of running a small flower farm- seed germination, plant propagation, field design and management, direct seeding and transplanting, succession planting, irrigation and water management, pest managememt, bed prepping, composting systems, hoop house flower production, greenhouse nursery operations, season extension techniques, harvesting and storage techniques, floral arranging techniques, annual vegetable production, and landscaping.

Skills Desired: This position reports to and works directly with our Field Manager. On certain days, Field Workers may work independently and therefore must be self-motivated, efficient, organized, and able to complete all tasks-at-hand. While learning opportunities are daily and abundant, a knowledge of basic/intermediate farming concepts and “how plants work” is crucial to the success of this position. Specific flower farming techniques can be learned over the course of the season, but general farm-related knowledge must already be attained by all applicants. Because we operate on a small-scale (less than an acre of land in production), all work is done by hand, meaning strength and stamina are also important qualities to possess.

Meals: No- but unlimited access to seasonal field-grown vegetables, as well as eggs and honey when abundant, are provided.

Stipend: Field Workers earn $2250/month plus rent-free living in an on-sight, vintage Airstream (a $500/month value), with access to our farm-grown seasonal produce and honey. This job has an expectation of 40 field hours per week. If on-site housing is unnecessary, other pay arrangements may also be negotiated for the right candidate.

Housing: We provide rent free, on-farm living in a private, vintage Airstream, with a shared outdoor kitchen and access to indoor bathrooms and showers, in beautiful Lyons, Colorado. Our farm is located directly across from the St. Vrain River and within walking or biking distance to town.
