Barney Creek Livestock is seeking a full-season commitment from a hardworking person who is interested in adaptive grazing and regenerative systems management. We are not a “cowboy outfit” and this will not be a vacation. Our grazing operation exists in Montana’s Paradise Valley in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. You will experience and learn many aspects of an adaptive grazing operation on irrigated and dryland acres. 

This opportunity begins in May and wraps up in August or September. Housing and stipend are included. Housing consists of a private tiny house. The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $1000.

Educational Opportunities: Be ready for--adaptive grazing planning and moves; installing portable electric fencing and constructing/repairing permanent fencing (barbed wire, high-tensile); pasture irrigation using K-line sprinklers, wheel lines, and pivots; and general construction projects. Will develop observation skills to guide grazing decisions that support soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem function. Additional experience includes grazing planning, and participating in livestock handling such as branding.

Skills Desired: This is a full-season commitment (mid-May through August), up to 40 hours per week (early season may be lighter). You’ll start by working alongside a team member and transition to independent work, so being comfortable collaborating and working solo is essential. We value curiosity and clear communication—ask questions, learn through dialogue, and be sure you fully understand tasks before starting. Strong attention to detail, follow-through, and basic tool skills are required (e.g., using a hammer or screwdriver, changing a tire). Please do not apply if these skills are unfamiliar. You should arrive on time while remaining flexible; ranch work adapts to weather, heat, storms, and equipment issues, which may shift schedules or require breaks. The role involves outdoor work in all conditions, lifting 40–50 lbs, hiking uneven terrain, and performing repetitive tasks. Clear, respectful communication is expected daily, including sharing feedback during team meetings so we can address issues early. Experience with ATVs, manual transmission vehicles, or mechanical work is a plus. An online ATV safety course is required before operating an ATV.

Stipend: Yes, $1000

Housing: Yes—a tiny house! Cozy, simple, and well-equipped, with a composting toilet, shower, sink, full-size bed, sofa, BBQ, hot plate, dorm fridge, microwave, crockpot, internet, and TV. Small space, big comfort.
