Farming and ranching practices that enable the soil to capture and hold moisture can increase profitability and improve soil health, biodiversity, and productivity.

Soil for Water is about implementing practical, cost-effective, and lasting ways to regenerate our soil—making farms, ranches, and communities more resilient. The project encourages us to think about healthy soil as permanent infrastructure that stores water to fuel productivity and better withstand the impacts of droughts and floods. By connecting innovative farmers and ranchers and tapping into their know-how, Soil for Water plays a key role in regenerating and improving farmland across America.

Farmers and ranchers regenerating the land

Soil for Water

Forty percent of all land in the U.S. is farm or ranch land. But it’s at risk. A growing network of farmers, ranchers, and land managers are taking steps to regenerate the land and strengthen their businesses.

From a Soil for Water Participant

Water retention is paramount for us. We need to be able to capture as much water as we can and, if it all comes at once, we need to slow it down.
