USDA Reports on Biotechnology in U.S. Crop Production

USDA Economic Research Service has released a report titled Biotechnology in U.S. Crop Production: A Primer on Adoption, Costs, and Regulatory Structure. The report notes that genetically engineered (GE) crop varieties have achieved widespread adoption in major field crops, accounting for more than 90% of corn, soybean, and cotton acreage in the United States since 2023. This report examines adoption rates, points out that developing weed resistance drives demand for new GE traits in crops, and notes potential limits to farmers’ options for planting crops with new GE traits.
