General Farm Description: Red Gate ranch is a small ranch with a large vision to nourish the minds, bodies, and soils of Northern California. We produce certified organic vegetables for our year-round Vegetable CSA and a local Certified Farmers Market. In addition to market vegetables, we also produce pasture raised, heritage pork and 100% grass fed and finished beef. We are looking for experienced, hard-working individuals to bring a positive attitude to the operations and production side of our market garden, to maintain the daily needs of our livestock and pastures, and to assist with the increased seasonal needs of production from March-October. We are located on 110 acres in the Northern Sacramento Valley, which is a hub for anyone who enjoys hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and camping in their off time.

Internship Details:

We are looking for an experienced individual who will assist the owners in fostering a fun but hardworking and productive working environment that will ensure quality yields of highly nutritious and certified organic food for our vegetable CSA, farmers market, and wholesale accounts. With an eye on ensuring the integrity of our soil building, low till, regenerative practices, the Production Manager (PM) is responsible for leading our field team on daily harvests and work plan execution. The candidate is someone who brings a solid amount of management experience to the farm and is comfortable with hiring, training, leading, and providing performance reviews while working alongside the team on all field work. The candidate may be someone who loves to farm but prefers managing the operational side of production as opposed to managing the bookkeeping and customer service side of the business.

This position requires individuals who have a high capacity for getting things done while always keeping the bigger picture in mind and staying one step ahead of the needs of the crew.
• Must bring a positive leadership attitude and experience leading a team.
• Must ensure all tasks are completed according to the SOPs and our Health and Safety Plan.
• Must be able to communicate clearly with crew members and leaders as well as offer constructive criticism graciously.
• Must be prepared each day with weather- and job-appropriate clothing and all field gear necessary to perform duties. This person must know what it means to truly be “field ready.”
• Must be willing to do what it takes to help the farm succeed, remaining flexible and open to change is a must.
Accountability & Responsibilities:
The PM will participate in weekly meetings with the owners to discuss schedule, plans, and tasks for the week. The owners have been actively engaged in the farming business for more than a decade and will rely heavily on the PM to ensure weekly work plans and harvests are completed with efficiency and accuracy. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Leading daily harvests: ensures proper bunch sizes and techniques are used during harvest for consistency and food safety protocols.
• Leading daily work plans: ensures SOP’s are followed for irrigation, weeding, mulching, feeding, soil tests, foliar/fertigation, bed turns, transplanting, use of seeders (Jang 5, EarthWay).
• Record keeping: ensures that all inputs, plantings, and direct seedings are recorded and labelled accurately and regularly.
• Assisting with creation and execution of SOP’s. We are actively building SOP’s for all areas of the farm.
• Marketing: the position does not require working the farmers markets unless an emergency arises. However, the PM will attend and assist with the execution of all CSA events and when scheduled, including one Sunday per year for our Fall Potluck.
• Providing coverage for livestock assistant may be required on occasion.

Skills Desired: Skills & Qualifications • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a productive market garden, preferably Certified Organic. • Ability and willingness to perform physical work with a good attitude in a variety of weather conditions. • Must be able to lift 50lb occasionally and 30lb regularly without strain. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Experience managing a field crew. • Reliable, on time, proactive and prepared. • Strong organizational skills and attention to details and efficiencies. • Experience with running small tractors and machinery (esp. BCS walk behind tractor) preferred. • Experience with Jang & EarthWay seeders. (We currently use the JP5 & EarthWay) • Familiarity or experience with crop planning software, Excel, or other record keeping tools. • Must have knowledge of and be willing to adhere to organic practices.

Stipend: Compensation & Benefits: $25-28 per hour depending on experience. We offer PTO, two paid holidays, work wear stipends and additional perks which will be discussed with potential candidates. We offer $200 (taxable) annual work wear stipend.
