General Farm Description: We are a micro-farm located on 10 acres of piñon-juniper woodlands and native grasslands in Northern New Mexico. Our operation is sustained entirely by rainwater catchment—there is no well on the property—so we manage our resources with great care. We currently raise dairy sheep, rabbits, chickens, and ducks. Our mission is to provide nourishing food, thoughtfully crafted farm products, and meaningful educational opportunities to our hyper-local community.

Internship Details:

We are looking for a motivated, positive, outgoing, and responsible person to join us for the month of October at Arroyo Runs Through It, our small regenerative micro-farm in rural San Pedro, New Mexico. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn about animal husbandry, regenerative grazing, soil health, water harvesting, and the day-to-day realities of running a small farm in a high-desert environment.

We are Nina and Dylan, a husband-and-wife team living and farming on 10 acres of piñon-juniper woodland and native grassland. Our farm is entirely dependent on rainwater catchment—we do not have a well—and we raise Navajo Churro sheep, meat rabbits, chickens, and ducks while maintaining a small garden and food forest.

October is a particularly active time on the farm, and the internship will focus on seasonal farm work, animal care, and implementing our grant funded pasture regeneration project. You will work alongside one of us most of the time, learning as you go. Specific projects will shift depending on weather, animal needs, and other time-sensitive farm tasks.

Potential Projects

• Routine morning and evening animal chores, including feeding and checking animals, cleaning the sheep pen, moving rotational grazing fencing, and watering the garden
• Assisting with our pasture regeneration project, including applying compost, spreading native grass seed, and setting up bale-grazing areas for the sheep
• Assisting with sheep shearing and animal processing, including rabbits; animal processing is optional, but willingness to participate in general farm work is important
• Weeding and removing invasive plants
• Creating water-harvesting earthworks and improving water infiltration on the landscape
• General farm maintenance and infrastructure projects as needed
• Helping care for the animals and complete routine farm chores while Nina and Dylan are away for approximately five days toward the end of October

This is a hands-on working farm internship, rather than a passive farm-stay. We are looking for someone who enjoys physical outdoor work, is comfortable getting dirty, takes initiative, and is interested in learning. Previous farm experience is helpful but not required.

Schedule

The expected commitment is approximately four days per week, five hours per day. The exact schedule will vary somewhat according to weather, animal needs, and time-sensitive projects.

We will generally work alongside you and provide instruction for unfamiliar tasks. As you become comfortable with particular chores, we may ask you to take responsibility for completing them independently.

Housing & Meals

You will stay in our private cob hut, approximately 120 square feet. It has:

• Full-size futon
• Bedding
• Solar charging station
• Lights
• Fan

The hut does not have heating, although we can provide plenty of blankets to keep you comfortable. October generally brings cool but manageable nights in northern New Mexico.

You will have full access to:

• An outdoor composting toilet
• Indoor shower
• Kitchen and pantry
• Common living space
• Farm and outdoor spaces

We typically share family dinners, although joining us is not mandatory if you have other plans. Breakfast and lunch will generally be on your own, and you will have full access to our kitchen, pantry, and refrigerator.

Because our farm relies entirely on rainwater catchment, water conservation is an important part of daily life here. We ask interns to be thoughtful about showers, dishwashing, and general water use.

What We’re Looking For

The right person will be:

• Reliable, responsible, and comfortable working independently when needed
• Friendly, outgoing, positive
• Physically capable of outdoor farm work
• Comfortable around livestock and willing to learn
• Interested in regenerative agriculture, animal husbandry, and/or ecological restoration
• Respectful of shared spaces and our home
• Comfortable living simply and conserving water

Because we live remotely, you must have your own reliable vehicle.

We would ideally host a woman or femme-presenting person, as one of our dogs has a history of abuse and is uncomfortable around men. We want to be transparent about this so that everyone is comfortable and safe.

A Note About the End of October

Nina and Dylan will be away for approximately five days toward the end of October. During this time, the intern will help Nina’s mom with routine animal care and farm chores. We will provide clear instructions and preparation beforehand, and this will be an important opportunity for someone who is comfortable taking responsibility and following established routines.

If October goes well for everyone, there is potential to extend the internship through the end of November.
