National Cover Crop Report Indicates Strong Farmer Interest

The ninth National Cover Crop Report, released September 1, 2026, by the Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC), USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, and American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), indicates strong interest in cover crops among many farmers. This year’s survey was completed online by 657 farmers in 46 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. Cover crop users reported increased yield in corn and soybean crops and many reported better weed control from cover crop use. Among users who grazed cover crops, 77% said this practice increased their profit. The survey this year identified a group of respondents as “intermittent users” of cover crops, acknowledging that a significant percentage of previous users of cover crops would consider using them again if they feel conditions warrant. The survey also indicated the effectiveness of incentive programs in initiating cover crop use. Of 256 cover crop users who received an incentive payment for cover crops in 2025, 81.6% said they probably or definitely would continue using cover crops beyond the term of their incentive program.
