Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a cut flower farm (and hops) on Vashon Island. We grow specialty flowers for wholesale, farmers markets and weddings and events. We also run a small you-pick field and farm stand on the property. We host weddings, workshops and a campground on the farm, as well as host a big hops harvest party each fall to get our hops into local brews. We have a small group of kunekune pigs we raise on the farm as well. We are not certified, but use organic practices, low till, and hand-scale cultivation. We have about 1 acre in production.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: Apr-25
Internship Ends: Oct-25
Number of Internship Available: 2
Application Deadline: 28-Feb-25
Minimum Length of Stay: All Season
Internship Details:
We are looking for farm crew members who have a passion and interest in growing, learning, and contributing to the success of our small farm. Crew members help with all farm tasks – seeding, bed prep, transplanting, weeding, fertilizing with a backpack sprayer, fixing and setting up irrigation, harvesting, sorting and bunching orders, and potentially some delivery or bouquet-making as well. There’s also the occasional small construction projects and repairs, some property maintenance, and we weed whack a lot in the spring. Our crew is up for whatever task the day needs, knowing not every task is a fun one. We work in rain and we work in heat. Some days we’re dragging stinky sloppy tarps around the field in the mud, some days we’re harvesting buckets of blooms as the sun rises and the birds wake up. With our small crew and lots to do, we’re never stuck on the same task for too long. We work hard but we take breaks, and we get to watch this property transform from our hard work throughout the season!
Crew members usually work 1-3 days a week, 8 hour shifts. Monday through Wednesday are typically our biggest farm work days. We will decide the schedule upon hiring, dependent on your availability and scheduling needs.
Educational Opportunities: On the job training, I share materials, books, ideas. Vashon also has a great "Farming in Community" program where you can tour other farms and meet and chat with other local farmers on the island.
Skills Desired: We can train, but experience on row crop farms is ideal. Bouquet-making experience is of interest, but not required.
Meals: No, but we sometimes cook a farm lunch together.
Stipend: We pay hourly, based on experience. Starting at $20/hour. We also offer an end of season bonus.
Housing: Currently no, but we have had folks stay in their own trailer on the property if that's a setup you have.
