In this video, Texas producers and researchers explain how keeping the ground covered acts as an armor that:
• Controls wind and water erosion by holding soil in place in windy or wet conditions
• Reduces evaporation rates by keeping moisture for plant use
• Stabilizes soil temperatures by making soil warmer in cold weather and cooler in hot weather. Avoiding fluxes of temperature helps the soil food web thrive.
• Reduces compaction by breaking up compacted soil and hardpans with living plant root and preventing further compaction from rain
• Suppresses weed growth by shading weed seedling and inhibiting its growth
• Improves habitat by providing for the soil food web’s surface dwellers
