General Farm Description: Second Street Farm is located just outside the city limits of Lander, Wyoming and owned and operated by Bailey and Pat Brennan (with two-year-old daughter Frances in tow). We are a small but diverse operation. We have about one acre under vegetable (and some flower) production, including one large high-tunnel. Our growing season is short; this is a great place to learn how to grow produce in the arid Mountain West. We use only organic practices and are low-till. We use a combination of drip tape and overhead sprinklers in the garden. We cultivate, hand weed, cover crop and tarp to help manage crops and build soil. We grow warm weather crops under row cover and in the high-tunnel, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and eggplant. We grow lots of storage crops to help get us and our customers through the long winters. We sell most of our produce at the Lander Valley Farmers Market every Saturday, through online sales, and some local restaurants. We also raise grass-fed Dexter cattle for beef and put up our own hay. We raise pastured turkeys, which we process on farm and sell directly to consumers for the holidays, and are considering adding hogs to our operation this year as well. This is our fourth season growing vegetables, third season raising cattle, and fifth season raising birds. We are still learning and expanding and hoping to find someone to join us on our adventure. Lander is home to a vibrant outdoor community and some of the best climbing in the world. There is quick access to the mountains, lakes, rivers, excellent fishing and other recreation opportunities. Jackson Hole, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are only a few hours away.

Internship Details:

Second Street Farm seeks an individual with farming experience to assist with vegetable and flower production for the 2023 growing season, as well as other farm duties dependent on experience and interest

Job Duties

• Quickly and efficiently execute garden tasks including, seeding, transplanting, watering, weeding, harvesting, trellising, pruning, and washing and packing.
• Ensure crops are regularly watered in the field, high tunnel and propagation house
• Monitor and manage weeds and pests using organic practices and tend to crops as necessary.
• Understand our growing and harvest schedule and crop rotation and work with farm owners/managers to adjust where necessary.
• Maintain and organize farm records, including seeding, harvest and market records.
• Help to manage a volunteer harvest crew every Friday and potentially harvest mid-week alone or with smaller crew.
• If comfortable and proficient, tractor work, including tilling, basket weeding, and cultivating.
• Attend and sell at the Lander Valley Farmers Market every Saturday.
• Depending on interest and experience, duties may also include helping with cattle, turkeys, and/or pigs; pasture irrigation and management; construction; tractor/truck repair and maintenance; and other farm jobs.
• Take care of the farm for a few days at a time while farm owners/managers go camping/hunting/fishing.

Educational Opportunities: We love to teach and are excited to share what we know about growing produce, raising poultry and beef, and building a farm business with whoever joins us. Pat has over a decade of experience raising cattle. Bailey has experience working on farms in Vermont and Idaho, and manages the garden operation. She also practices environmental law, which informs the farming operation. Here's some of what you can expect to learn: - High altitude, short season production of vegetables in the field and high tunnel. - Pasture management, rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture. - Potentially raising turkeys on pasture; we are still weighing whether to raise birds this season given avian flu risks. - Tractor and farm vehicle maintenance and repair.

Skills Desired: - Ideally, 1-2 years of farming experience but will consider driven individuals with only gardening experience. - Physically fit, able to lift a minimum of forty pounds and endure repetitive tasks, like weeding and harvesting, for long periods of time. - Emotional maturity, patience and strong communication skills. - Ability to work effectively and efficiently both alone and as part of a team. - Self-reliance, flexibility, and desire to problem-solve and maximize efficiency. - A desire to spend your days outside regardless of the weather, working with your body, going to bed tired, getting to know us and our amazing community of customers, volunteers and fellow farmers.  - Interest in small farming, especially vegetable production, but also some flowers, cows and poultry. Ideally, you see yourself starting your own farm some day, becoming a farm manager, or potentially taking on a leadership role with us as we grow our farm.

Meals: We provide lunch on Fridays and occasional meal with our family.

Stipend: Pay is dependent on experience but a minimum of $13 per hour, with a likely end-of-season bonus, plus produce and occasionally meat.
