General Farm Description: We regeneratively grow vegetables and herbs on about a ¼-acre plot on our exurban property situated 20 minutes west of Charlottesville, Virginia. Though we sometimes sell our produce, our principal clients are food banks. Our organizational model is distinctly “not-for-profit,” which gives us wide latitude to explore unproven, socially and environmentally minded food-production and distribution methods. This could be an attraction for some interns and a turn-off for others. Much of what you learn here may not be directly transferable to a financially viable farming enterprise. On the other hand, this nation’s farm and food system is broken, meaning the template for a “financially viable farming enterprise” is skewed toward unsustainable practices. We hope that what we are learning at Resolution Farms might contribute to the growing base of experience and knowledge that will transform the system. Examples of our practices include small-scale thermophilic composting, cover cropping, minimal soil disturbance, promotion of complex soil biology, living pathways, promotion of habitat complexity, and integration of native plants as insectaries.

Internship Details:

You will be involved with every aspect of vegetable and herb production and distribution—from planning through production through delivery. We assume candidates are aware that the work is physically demanding and involves exposure to inclement weather, sun and heat, bugs and other critters, allergens, etc.

The work week is 25 hours, primarily on weekday mornings (early). We can make some schedule adjustments to accommodate interns’ needs if, for instance, the intern wants to work an outside job for income. If the intern is interested in selling some of the produce, they may do so on their own time and take a significant share of the profit.

We hosts will provide guidance and instruction around our particular methods. Sometimes instructions will be exacting. At other times, and depending on skill and experience, interns will have opportunities to develop their own approaches to tasks and projects. Though we will closely oversee the operation, most work will be performed by interns and volunteers. Our physical capacity is limited by age (we are 69), and we will expressly be relying on you to make the farm work.

We will consider a pair or couple, and/or we may invite two independent interns to the farm. The best fit for this internship is probably a partially experienced gardener or farmer who wants to explore so-called “regenerative” techniques at an artisanal production level and who would be comfortable living with an older couple.

Educational Opportunities: No credits offered, but plenty to learn here!

Skills Desired: Farming, carpentry, and general "handyman" and property maintenance experience are valued, but we will consider serious candidates who don't have experience.

Meals: Yes. All food provided, as well as meal preparation when host and intern menus and schedules overlap. We are organic omnivores, but we can adjust interns' menu per their needs.
