General Farm Description: The Organic Farm School operates a small scale production farm that serves as the foundation for our New Farmer training program. It is a hybrid of a production farm and a teaching/model farm. Our work is accomplished by a lean, mission-aligned staff. Moving in to the 2021 season, we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivational Field Supervisor to work closely with our Farm Manager and new farmers. The successful candidate will have a passion for community scale farming and be prepared to take personal ownership of their role and the contribution they can make in the cultivation of new farmers.CRAFT Member Farm? Internship Details:
Key Responsibilities: Reporting to and working with the Farm Manager, the Organic Farm School Field Supervisor works with trainees in production-style implementation of the annual crop plan — with a focus on the propagation schedule, harvest planning, and wash/pack quality control.
Essential Job Functions:
• implement plans generated by the Farm Manager, to include field prep and harvest management
• communicate with staff and trainees, fielding questions from students and community about the Organic Farm School and farming in general
• assume a key role in transplant production and greenhouse mgmt
• plan and execute bi-weekly harvests
• provide wash/pack supervision in a production setting
• be able to work at a production farm pace and balance the production goal with teaching objectives, including development of trainee pace
• observe and communicate field conditions/patterns
• be able to communicate the “why” as well as the “what and how” in directing/supervising field tasks
• demonstrate attention to detail and follow-through
• participate in/provide assistance with livestock harvest
• supervise direct to retail marketing
• lead farm tours and field walks
Other Specific Requirements:
• completion of a farmer training program, a 4-year degree in environmental studies, agriculture, or related field, or equivalent on-farm training and experience
• have an interest in practices that further regenerative ag/community
• have at least 2-3 years of farm experience that has included some level of decision-making and leadership roles
• have organic ag/regenerative/market garden experience – with annual vegetables
• Valid Washington State driver’s license (or ability to transfer current driver’s license to Washington State upon hiring)
• be able to lift 50lbs, and work 5 days a week in all weather conditions
• use Excel
• demonstrate good E-mail practices
• use and supervise walk-behind tractor
• use and supervise conventional tillage and cultivation tractors
Other Skills Desired
• experience/understanding of farming for a non-profit organization
Compensation
• $37,000 – $40,000 DOE
