Internship information
General Farm Description: Our family homestead offers an intimate, real‑life look at what it means to run a diversified micro farm alongside raising a young family. The land includes rotational pasture for our family milk cow, a flock of laying hens, perennial plantings, pollinator borders, and intensive garden beds that provide much of our household food plus seasonal surplus for a small community. We prioritize regenerative practices—no tillage, heavy mulching, compost and manure management, and thoughtful water use—aimed at leaving the soil, animals, and people stronger each year. Life here is hands‑on and seasonal: spring planting and calving rhythms, summer garden abundance, fall preservation, and winter planning. The farmhouse kitchen is as central as the barn, with a strong emphasis on transforming raw ingredients into nutrient‑dense everyday meals, ferments, dairy, and preserved foods. This is a place for someone who wants to experience the unpolished, day‑to‑day reality of homestead life, not a staged version of farming.

Educational Opportunities: You’re not just signing up for farm skills here; you’re stepping into the daily life of a family that has organized everything around organic, nutrient‑dense living, in a place that’s unusually beautiful even by mountain standards. Our homestead is set on a former Airbnb property with expansive mountain views, generous outdoor spaces, and a large stone fire pit where people naturally gather in the evenings. There are two additional apartments on the property that we rent out, so while we don’t use the term “intentional community,” there is a small, friendly constellation of people you’ll cross paths with on the driveway, by the fire pit, or headed out for a walk. In terms of learning, this is as much a kitchen and lifestyle internship as it is a land‑based one. Alongside milking and outside chores, you’ll get to participate in the full cycle of turning raw ingredients into real food: canning tomatoes, pickling vegetables, making big crocks of sauerkraut, playing with new kefir flavors, and helping to keep a household fed on from‑scratch meals. There is space in the garden beds for you to experiment with your own interests—whether that’s a medicinal herb patch, a dye‑plant corner, or a row of your favorite flowers or vegetables—and we’ll support you in planning and tending those mini‑projects. Because we are not running a full‑scale production farm (the micro dairy is the main income‑producing enterprise), there is more room here for curiosity, questions, and trying things. You’ll see how a regenerative, organic homestead can be woven into real family life, and you’ll have plenty of quiet, solo work time for listening to podcasts, music, or your own thoughts as you develop a more contemplative relationship with the land and animals.

Skills Desired: We are especially interested in applicants who want hands‑on experience in: Daily dairy operations and animal care. Regenerative garden and pasture management on a homestead scale. Integrating land‑based work with a kitchen‑centered, nutrient‑dense food culture. If there are particular skills you’re hoping to leave with (for example, “competent milker,” “comfortable running solo chores,” or “basic vegetable growing skills”), please share those in your application so we can see if this is a good mutual fit.
