Internship information
General Farm Description: Early Boots Farm is a regenerative, family farm located just north of Sauk Centre, MN on 200 acres of fields, forests and wetlands. We are a MN Ag Water Quality Certified Farm. Early Boots is home to a herd of lowline angus cattle, a seasonal flock of Hampshire lambs, and diverse other farm critters from year to year, not to mention a host of wildlife. We direct market our farm products to consumers in Minnesota via bulk sales, farmer's markets, and online retail orders. We are a perennials-based operation utilizing multiple forms of agroforestry (especially silvopasture), diverse polyculture pastures, and some small-scale fruit crops.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Educational Opportunities: We have been trained in aspects of holistic management and can share that formation with interns per their interest. Any farming, forestry, gardening or construction skills the intern does not arrive with can be learned on the job. Neighboring farms offer opportunities to learn about and contribute to biodynamic practices, vegetable production using green houses and hoop houses, goat milking, and more. Tyler works as an agroforestry consultant for the Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota; an intern at Early Boots Farm would have opportunities to participate in SFA's workshops, field days and other events.
Skills Desired: This position requires that the intern must … Work outside in the natural elements for long hours – including heat, humidity, rain, bugs, wind, pollen, and noxious plants. Practice proper self-care and take appropriate protective measures (ex. wearing sunscreen, wearing close-toed shoes and other clothing appropriate to the weather and the task at hand, staying hydrated, using equipment as instructed) while working on the farm to maintain health and minimize risk of injury. Follow CDC recommendations and guidelines issued by the state of MN on and off the farm to protect the health of the intern, the farmers and their clients and to reduce risk of exposure to COVID-19. Maintain open, honest, respectful, and regular communication with the farmers around work, scheduling, any questions or concerns, and all matters related to health and safety. Display respect for and attentiveness to the livestock in our care. Learn and implement low-stress livestock handling techniques. Work alongside the farmers on a wide range of tasks and perform tasks independently as training and experience allow. Understand that this is a family operation, and that the intern will be interacting daily with a young child. These interactions should be age-appropriate and promote the safety and well-being of the child.
Meals: Lunch will be provided on weekday work days for a shared meal with the farmers. Morning and evening meals on your own using fresh and frozen foods from the farm plus a $25 weekly grocery stipend.
Stipend: Receive a stipend of $250-300 each week depending on experience for 40+ hours of labor.
Housing: Housing is provided (private bedroom in an off-farm home on a lake on the edge of town. Access to full kitchen, bath, and communal spaces). A vehicle can be available to the intern for transit to and from the farm. If the intern has a personal vehicle, a small weekly gas stipend will be provided.
