Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a non-profit market garden and livestock farm operating in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Our goals are to cultivate the land, feed our community, and pass it on. Our produce team accomplishes these goals by practicing regenerative small scale vegetable growing techniques, donating a substantial portion of our harvest to the local food bank, and teaching others how to grow and care for vegetables. We utilize a minimum tillage practice with emphasis on promoting soil biology as well as a balanced above ground ecosystem. We grow inside a fenced in 2 acre plot utilizing just under 1 acre of bed/path space. In 2022, we will be hosting a 50-70 member summer CSA as well as a small Fall CSA. We will also sell to our local Co-op as well as local restaurants in the shoulder seasons. We have 72 100ft x 30in beds in production which are now under cover crop. 16 of those beds take up two of our high tunnels and we will grow over 35 different vegetables throughout the year. We are heading into our second year of production and we will be continuing to scale up our growing space. We operate a pasture based livestock program where we raise broilers, sheep, goats and pigs. Our livestock program is new to our operation and is growing. In 2022, we will raise 600 broilers, 30 pigs and a sheep flock of 12 ewes. Our animals spent the vast majority of their lives on pasture and we rotate them to new paddocks daily to weekly depending on species.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Fecha de inicio de las prácticas: March 1st 2021 for part time and early February for full time
Fin de las prácticas: Nov 1st 2021 for part time possibly longer for full time
Number of Internship Available: 3
Application Deadline: April 15th 2021 for part time and March 1st for full time
Minimum Length of Stay: 8 months
Internship Details:
Currently 2 full time and 1 part time position available.
The two full time positions will be 40 hrs/week on average with longer days in the summer and shorter days in the winter. We will all take turns watering the farm on the weekends so occasional weekends required. This position will start in early February and end November first with the possibility of staying through winter production. We would love a one season commitment or longer as you work alongside a growing farm. Tasks include the typical market garden work days with harvesting, planting, starting seeds, caring for seedlings and managing irrigation around the farm, washing/packing vegetables, cultivating, adding amendments and balancing soils, greenhouse management, and as many other tasks that are needed on a busy market garden! We would prefer market garden experience but we can work with someone that has a little garden knowledge, a lot of enthusiasm, and a great work ethic.
This role may have the opportunity to work with our livestock program. Since this program is not to the capacity of our garden program, the amount of work required will be far less. Working with our livestock program will include general care taking of our livestock, livestock infrastructure construction, picking up processed meat from our USDA processor and delivering to the local food bank. General care taking of livestock includes, but is not limited to feeding, moving, and administering basic veterinary care.
The part time farm position is from March 1st to Nov 1st for 20 hrs/week. We will require one day of 7hrs and 2 days of 6hrs of work each week.
Feel free to contact Ellen Gray Gregory for more details or if you have any questions.
Educational Opportunities: You will learn what it takes to run a market garden and we will to teach you as much as you want to know. We have a small library of farming/market gardening books that will be available to you. You will also learn the kinks and bumps of a young farm in startup mode and the failures and successes the farm will have during the year.
Skills Desired: Preferably one season of market gardening experience or something similar but will work with applicants that are enthused enough to commit.
Meals: No, but you will have access to as many vegetables as we have to offer.
Stipend: $13/hr at 20hrs/week for part time. $13/hr for full time.
Housing: No
