Internship information

General Farm Description: We are a 4-acre sustainable farm, 3 miles west of Pontiac, IL, growing a wide variety of vegetables, as well as apples for our 11th season. Our produce is marketed through our CSA, at the downtown Pontiac Farmer's Market, and in local, downstate, and Chicago restaurants, and through Chicago local fresh produce vendors. Our location is 100 miles south of Chicago, with Amtrak service and Rt 66 attractions close by.

• Why Partner With Us?

  Our mission is to teach and mentor an intern to experience what it takes to be a farmer with the strong possibility of developing into a partnership in the operation. Being a small operation, our intern receives hand-on knowledge about growing many kinds of vegetables. A strong interest and enthusiasm for local sustainable agriculture and a positive attitude along with willingness to learn new skills and responsibilities is essential. Prior gardening/farming experience is preferred but not essential.

  • Our farm adheres to organic standards for quality and sustainability, but we do not pursue certification.
  • Established Infrastructure: Benefit from well-maintained land approximately 3 aces with a hoop house and green house, 8 apple trees, 1 cherry tree, along with a small number of blackberries and grapes.
  • Specialized equipment supplied 2022 BCS walk behind tractor with 2’ rototiller, bed rotary mower and vertical plow attachments. Mitsubishi 16hp tractor with 4’ rototiller and 3-point hitch bedmaker; Till-more Ox walk-behind weeder with rolling basket weeder, finger weeder and edge finger weeder/cultivators; 2020 60hp Massey Feguson tractor with loader/forks, plastic mulch layer, 2 row JD sweet corn finger planter, 2023 one-row root crop harvester, 5 foot JD cultivator, 2 row cultivator, 1 row cultivator, 5’ Woods mower. Honda 4-wheeler is used with a cart, and small sprayer.
  • Complete packing shed setup with 2 walk-in coolers, with two sinks and tables/counters along with crates, trays and packaging inventory. Small hand tools and hand planting equipment.
  • Resources to support operations: For 15 years we have been able to use drip irrigation if it gets dry to keep things growing well, we have a clean reliable well.
  • Supportive Community: Chuck and Kathy have a lifetime on the farm; Chuck has a B.S. in agronomy agriculture from I.S.U.; Chuck and Kathy both had been involved in organic vegetable agriculture for 15 years; Original members of “Legacy of Land”, a local farmer support group for sharing ideas and resources, and learning about techniques to grow organic produce for chefs guided by Marty Travis; we have also have attended many workshops and conferences over the years
  • Work alongside other like-minded individuals in a collaborative environment such as local organic farmers and enthusiastic volunteers. We have volunteers come to our farm weekly.
  • Market Access: Tap into existing distribution channels and networks such as 13 years with “Down at the Farms”, a Chicago and downstate market food hub; Carroll’s Timber Edge Farm CSA; and local Pontiac farmer’s market.
  • Shared Vision: Contribute to a farm that values ecological stewardship, innovation, and long-term sustainability; cover crops, compost, composted cow manure, and organic chicken poo used to fertilize; use Advancing Eco Agriculture products for foliar nutrition and biological fertility in the soil; living mulch between vegetable beds several years’ experience, interested in doing more.

Educational Opportunities: Will be hands on and in all aspects of the farm, from greenhouse, hoop house and field, to raised bed-making, soil preparation, compost application, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, mulching, weeding, drip irrigation, pest and weed management, pruning, training vines, harvesting, washing, packing CSA shares, selling at the market, filling restaurant and market orders and more.

Skills Desired: Applicants must have a desire to learn, strong work ethic, eye for detail, good interpersonal skills, efficient yet adaptable, and the ability to work independently yet be a team player too. Must not be averse to working outside in sometimes challenging weather that is hot, cold, wet, windy, and humid or absolutely beautiful. A valid driver's license is preferred.

Meals: A home cooked noon meal daily.
