A new net wrap for hay bales, Nature’s Net Wrap, is made from plant-based biopolymers that break down through microbial activity, reports Farm Progress. The innovation reduces plastic waste, because the product is compostable, and reduces health risks to ruminant livestock from consuming pieces of wrap, because the wrap breaks down in the rumen. Proponents say the plant-based wrap saves on labor costs, as it can stay on bales used for bale grazing and can be fed through bale processors, tub grinders, and vertical mixers. The wrap degrades in six months in active compost or manure piles, and in two to three years under pasture conditions when in contact with soil. The product is commercially available and usable in standard balers with minor adjustments.
