A University of Connecticut Extension team seeks to expand urban agriculture in Connecticut through a project that is assessing urban farmers’ land needs and identifying vacant lots in urban and peri-urban areas that could meet those needs, reports UConn Today. The project team is using geospatial analysis to identify potential land for urban agriculture, including state and public land. Existing Extension resources will support new urban farmers with zoning changes, farm business planning, and production information. The project’s final phase involves connecting farmers with land and securing lease agreements. The project has a goal of expanding or starting 20 urban farming operations.
