Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a small-scale, diversified, certified organic farm in rural Wisconsin that has been in production for 50 years. We raise a variety of vegetables as well as apples, sheep, and pigs. In the spring, we make maple syrup. Our produce is sold at our local food co-op as well as our on-farm store. Interns can expect to gain experience in all aspects of field work on the farm including seed planting, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, filling orders for customers, delivering produce to stores, and orchard work thinning, picking, and selling apples during our u-pick days in the fall. We have a small crew of 2-4 part time farm helpers and volunteers who help make working at Rising Sun Farm a great experience. There are opportunities to work in a crew and alone on this farm. Rising Sun Farm and Orchard is a low-till farm. We will utilize the natural ecosystems of the soil to help maintain proper soil structure, sequester carbon, as well as making natural occurring nutrients in the soil more available to our plants to help cut back on external inputs. We are believers in regenerative agriculture and are striving to make our farm into a more sustainable environment for the soil, air, water, animals, and people.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Depending on start date, interns will be part of all aspects of small-scale vegetable production, animal husbandry, and apple orchard work. Interns will participate in planting seed, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, making soil, and feeding pigs. Orchard work includes hand thinning apples and picking apples for sales. We are a no-till market garden that focuses on diversity of crop, products, sales outlets, and ecology of the land.
We are looking for someone to work at least 3 months starting May 1 or August 1. We are open to keeping the same person for the whole season depending on the situation. Farming is hard and not for everyone. Sometimes 3 months is the perfect amount of time. But if it works out, longer would be welcomed.
Educational Opportunities: Education in small-scale, organic farm production in the field and greenhouses using no-till methods inspired by regenerative agriculture. Areas of development will include planting, crop rotation, crop management and maintenance, harvesting, market preparation, customer interaction and animal raising.

Applicants with critical thinking skills, ability to identify basic hand tools, a good work ethic and an understanding of living without all of the amenities at hand may be given preference. Must be able to work as a team as well as alone in the field. A desire to be on a peaceful quiet farm required. Good communication with co-workers is a must.
Meals: Lunches are prepared and shared on work days. Interns are responsible for their breakfast and dinner. Farm produce/eggs/syrup available to interns.
Stipend: Dependent on experience. $600/month or higher with bonus at end of term. Housing and most food included.
