General Farm Description: Midnight’s is a small, diversified farm rooted in regenerative practices, climate engagement, and community. We strive to model stewardship and production that tends the soil and addresses the climate crisis through community scale compost production, rotational grazing, biochar utilization, agroforestry and intensive no-till vegetable and berry production. Beyond the compost facility and food production, Midnight’s commitment to community includes running Down Dog Studio, the Field House Farm Stay, and hosting educational events. The farm is also a platform for engagement and advocacy. Internship Details:

Live, learn, and connect on Midnight’s Farm on Lopez Island in northwest Washington. Combine experiential field learning, with an individually designed focus of study in the intersection of small scale ag and climate.

Our current curiosities/projects include refining our potting mix recipe and production, experimenting with compost extraction, improving pasture through cover crops, agroforestry, perfecting our salad mix, designing a new common farm house and incorporating climate storytelling into our outreach – on the island and beyond.
We run our internship through the Washington State’s Farm Internship Program, which guarantees oversight and coverage for on-the-job injuries. We also partner with the Lopez Community Land Trust (LCLT), a nonprofit dedicated to sustainable agriculture, affordable housing, and rural community resilience on Lopez. LCLT creates a broader framework of support through its Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Internship Program, including tours, shared learning days, and a cohort of interns placed with multiple farms and food system projects.
We have a desire and flexibility for this internship to suit where you are in your journey assuming there’s a match with the farm’s capacity, strengths, and needs Depending on the length of your internship and your interests, the Midnight’s Farm internship might include a deeper dive into composting or soil health, Climate Farm School online curriculum, Market Garden Masterclass online coursework or a climate-focused track that includes Terra.do’s Learning For Action course.
Shared expectations for all interns:
Duration: 3–6 months on-farm, with specific dates arranged individually.

Weekly work schedule: 32–40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, around 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. with an hour lunch, adjusted seasonally. There are occasional prearranged chores on the weekends or after the workday.

Core responsibilities on Midnight’s Farm:
Work in the market garden, orchards, livestock, compost, and general farm chores.
Shared meal preparation and cleanup on workdays.
Regular individual and group check-ins to support learning goals and a productive and fun working environment.
Weekly entries in a shared Farm Journal for reflection and storytelling.
Compensation
A base stipend ($50 per workday).
End-of-season bonus in the range of $700- $1,600 depending on length of stay.
On-the-job injury coverage.
Additional hourly pay for extra tasks (Field House cleaning and lawn mowing) beyond the core internship.

Housing
Cozy, rustic quarters with a composting toilet and access to shared showers (indoors in the barn and outdoors near the sauna).
Wi-Fi in housing, studio and barn/bakehouse spaces.
Kitchen, food & farm perks:
Access to your own and/or shared kitchen.
Unlimited seasonal vegetables and fruits from the market garden and orchard.
Farm lunches made from scratch on workdays.
Staples such as rice, beans, flour, sugar, condiments, and olive oil.
Weekly credit (e.g., up to $30/week) toward farm-raised meat and eggs from the farm stand.
Use of the sauna, yoga studio, swimming pond, and farm bikes.

The Work and Learning
Depending on season and interest, you can expect experience in:
Market Garden and Orchard
Seeding, transplant care, bed prep, planting, weed and pest management, and drip irrigation.
Harvesting, washing, sorting, and packing for markets, restaurants, and the farm stand.
Pruning, mulching, weeding, and fencing in hedgerows and orchards.
Livestock and Grazing
Rotational grazing of cattle, moving electric fence, monitoring forage and water.
Supporting haylage production.
Compost Facility
Fundamentals of an aerated static pile compost system: recipes, feedstocks, and thermophilic phases.
Managing material drop-offs, site organization, and equipment interaction.
Marketing, Distribution, and Storytelling
Weekly fresh sheet for restaurants
San Juan Island Food Hub
Supporting website or social media as appropriate, and telling the farm story to customers and visitors.
Infrastructure, Woodlot, and Fire Risk Reduction
General farm maintenance, basic tool care, and simple repairs.
Participation in woodlot management, ladder fuel reduction, and biochar production.

Skills Desired: Ideal candidate will: Desire to either work in agriculture or climate/foodsystem space. Bring the values of “Curiosity, Generosity, and Optimism” Have or be developing an end goal in mind for this combined farm/climate learning experience. Be reliable – show up on time ready to learn and work. Communicate clearly – respond to calls or emails or text with clarity and in “real time”. Ask questions and make suggestions when information or tasks aren’t clear or don’t make sense. Bring up issues directly with the people concerned. Engage fully and be capable of the hard physical work – shoveling, raking, weeding, lifting 40 lbs, etc. Show some hustle and enthusiasm for getting stuff done! – while running really isn’t necessary, we confess to having little patience for dawdling. Think about what they are doing and be interested in learning. We expect those that are working/learning with us to pay attention to the details of the job and ask questions. We are constantly learning ourselves. An ideal candidate will be a keen observer and bring a love of learning -- researching and looking up new information. Look for and communicate ideas to make the operation or particular task more efficient, safe, green, profitable and/or pleasurable (sense of humor is a plus). Pay particular attention to their and others' safety.
