Internship information
General Farm Description: We grow 40+ vegetables on an acre and a half and bake sourdough breads and pastries in our woodfired oven. We sell mostly at farmers markets, March-December. We are proud of our work producing fresh food that is sold locally. We aim to improve soil health, leaving it better than we found it. We see ourselves as part of a community of food producers all doing their small part to fix a food system that doesn’t account for humanity’s impact on the environment, and we are looking for a worker who wants to help us and learn from us. You will be an essential part of our business and gain hand-on experience using organic methods to bring vegetables to market. 2026 will be our thirteenth season growing vegetables full time. We are a husband and wife with three kids, and our staff includes 1 full-time employee, and 2-3 part-time employees. We are a small professional market farm that wants to train future farmers and business owners. Our goal is that you will learn both the vegetable grower skills and the business skills you need to start your own ecological vegetable farm business. We are very open about our business and we are happy to share our sales, expenses, and budget numbers with our employees as well as discuss business plans. In the field, we want you to walk side by side with us, not behind us. We believe that economic success is an important, and often overlooked, piece of "sustainability." However, while we focus on the bottom line, we also value family, relationships, and well-being, and we work hard to make space and time for it all. Our passion for using regional grain in our bakery motivated us to help found the Common Grain Alliance, a non-profit that seeks to revitalize the grain economy in the Mid-Atlantic. As part of Little Hat Creek Farm, you will be connected to a growing network of like-minded farmers, millers, and bakers who are working towards a thriving regional foodshed.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Fecha de inicio de las prácticas: Approximately March 15th 2026

Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: rolling
Minimum Length of Stay: full season
Internship Details:
You will work closely with us to learn all aspects of growing ecological vegetables, including seeding, planting, harvesting, sorting, weeding, mulching, and selling at market. You will learn skills such as greenhouse management, efficient harvest techniques, cover cropping, and how to run a profitable business focused on farmers’ markets. We like to tell stories and joke around as we work, as long as you can keep your hands moving and your mind on your work.
Previous farming experience is preferred, but mostly we’d like you to have an interest in sustainable agriculture and a strong work ethic. You learn quickly, and can execute tasks efficiently while maintaining sufficient attention to detail. You can perform physically-demanding tasks outside in all kinds of weather, and maintain a sense of humor. You are thoughtful, inquisitive, and find satisfaction in hard work, good food, and good company. A driver’s license is required and you must be comfortable driving a large van on mountain roads. You should be able to lift 50 pounds, and be in good physical condition. You will need a smartphone to operate a Square reader for credit card sales at farmers’ markets and to keep records in Google Sheets.
This position is part time: 3-4 days per week, including 1-2 farmers’ markets per week. We are keen to have the most help on our harvest days (Tuesday/Friday) and our market days (Wednesday/Saturday). Harvest days typically last 8 hours, including a half hour paid lunch. Market days can be closer to 10 hours, including 2 hours of driving time. If you are looking for a maximum/minimum number of weekly hours, we may be able to work something out. Contact us for details about the weekly schedule.
Educational Opportunities: We encourage questions about all aspects of our business. During the season, we will offer the opportunity to tour other ecological farms in our area.
Skills Desired: We've enjoyed working with both experienced and unexperienced, skilled and unskilled people. Having a good attitude about hard work is the most important thing.
Meals: No, but unsold vegetables, bread, and pastries are all up for grabs after our Wednesday and Saturday farmers' markets.
Stipend: Pay is hourly, starting at $16/hr. We give a w2 at the end of the year.
Housing: Housing is available for rent in a four bedroom house on one acre about 10 minutes drive from our farm. We built the house in 2022 as worker housing. Currently, our full time worker and a worker from a nearby farm plan to live there in 2026.
