General Farm Description: Kitsap Conservation District's GRACE Garden Project's Farm to Community Programs increase access and advance equity in the local food system by supporting local agriculture and providing fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables to local hunger relief organizations. The one-acre farm provides on-site demonstration of sustainable farming practices, technical assistance to local farmers and 20,000# of fresh vegetables annually to local food banks.CRAFT Member Farm? Internship Details:
The Community Food System Specialist will address poverty and food insecurity by increasing the volume of healthy, fresh foods distributed to food banks by the GRACE Program’s existing hunger relief activities and support relationships between hunger relief programs, farmers, and community partners. The member will assist with the Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP) and Farm to Freezer (F2FR) Programs by coordinating with farmers and food processors to distribute fresh and processed items to food banks. This position also involves all aspects of diversified vegetable farming including propagation, planting, weeding, harvesting, packing and delivery of produce to hunger relief organizations using District vehicles.
Educational Opportunities: Robust professional development opportunities in sustainable farming, farm and food safety, and community food systems. Farm education includes propagation, green house and high tunnel production, reduced tillage production, irrigation management, post harvest produce handling and all other aspects of diversified vegetable production.
Skills Desired: Farming, natural resource conservation or similar experience. Operate tractor, dump truck, trailer and small equipment (BCS tractor, weed whacker, power tools). Food service experience helpful. Able to lift 50 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, squat and bend frequently. Driver's license.
Meals: Fresh, organic produce all year round, plus locally processed soups. Full kitchen available. We eat very well at the District.
Stipend: Two positions available offering: Monthly Stipend of $2171.43 and $6895.00 education award that can be used for future schooling or to pay off existing qualified student loan debt (upon successful completion of the service term, subject to federal tax). Basic health insurance (not including vision coverage). Workers compensation coverage. Assistance with childcare costs. Forbearance (temporarily postponing paying off a loan) of qualified student loans during the service term. Payment of interest on qualified student loans that accrued during the service term (paid after successful completion of service term). Serving in a full-time AmeriCorps position qualifies as “employment” towards the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program
