Internship information
General Farm Description: Gateway to the Arctic Camp is a unique agricultural camp in Talkeetna, Alaska dedicated to service and agriculture. Our VISION is to see a world where people OF ALL ABILITIES can live meaningful lives. We do this through agricultural camps and our new supported employment program. During our camps, participants will grow in their knowledge of agriculture, sustainable and responsible living, empowering service, and effective leadership, all while experiencing an unforgettable summer. The majority of the produce grown at the camp is donated to the nearby Upper Susitna Food Pantry. To date, G2A has donated more than 3,000 pounds of produce to rural Alaskans! Our unique supported employment program is designed to hire those who have special abilities to work for G2A. Through their work they learn carpentry and electrical skills, sustainable agriculture and the aptitude for daily life. We also have two group homes at the camp, where individuals with special abilities live year-round.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Our interns are the HEART of our camp operations and will be broken into two groups (camp-focused & project-focused). Interns will play a major role in construction activities for maintenance and improvements, leading our supported employment workers, land and trail development, coordinating volunteers, and, of course, managing our sustainable farm! Interns will stay in our dry cabins during the summer, with access to the kitchen, a bathroom, and showers in the main lodge. Although the internship will be based at the camp, interns will take at least a few trips into Anchorage, get to explore the vibrant community of Talkeetna, and get their own intern adventure at the end of the summer!
Educational Opportunities: Our interns will have the opportunity to take a leadership role in our sustainable garden and learn how to grow delicious and nutrition-dense produce in Alaska's unique climate. With our mild summers and days with 20+ hours of sunlight, farming in Alaska is truly an experience like no other! Between our high tunnel, more than 60 outdoor garden boxes, a potato field, and a pumpkin patch, our interns will work with a large variety of crops, from raspberry bushes, strawberries, tomatoes, squash, and many, many more! Additionally, our interns will learn to raise and butcher broilers, take care of our laying hens, and work with our bees.
Skills Desired: The greatest requirement is this: having the desire and the willingness to learn and apply. We are looking for applicants with any of these specific skill sets: • Agriculture (including working with animals) • Camp Counseling • Construction • Program Development (ex. Sustainability, Marketing, Grant Writing, Administration) • Working with Special Ability Youth/Adults

Stipend: This is an unpaid internship, but we offer free room, board, and food throughout the summer! Interns typically bring some spending money for souvenirs and to go out to eat occasionally, but it's not required.
