The Farber Farm Summer Specialists are the education/program/farmhand team during the summer camp weeks (June-August 2024). The specialists are responsible for implementing field work and summer camp programs at the farm centered around written farm curriculum as well as their own experience of farm related activities. These specialists will work and report directly to the Farm Educator and Farm Manager to ensure that farm activities are done correctly and at appropriate times (example: when and how to harvest certain crops, what and where to weed, correct program management etc.). The specialists should have an interest in and/or experience with food, farming, homesteading skills, sustainability, Jewish agricultural knowledge, and experiential education. The FFSE will work very closely with Camp Maas staff and are under the direct supervision of the Camp Maas Director and Farm Manager. The FFSE will follow all Tamarack Camps COVID safety guidelines and all Farber Farm COVID safety guidelines. Start date flexibility, but no later than June 6th.
Specialist Job Responsibilities Include
-Implementation of farm programming
-Collective care of farm/field program tools and supplies
– Farm and garden labor at appropriate times
-Assistance with Sensory Garden maintenance and programming (planting, weeding, keeping area clean, propagation/purchase of Sensory Garden plants, water management, trail upkeep, etc.)
-Maintaining clean and comfortable common spaces
-Maintaining clean and organized culinary and arts/crafts program supplies and materials
-Running of the farm Mud Oven (includes stocking firewood, keeping area clean, running the Mud Oven and training other staff members to assist in Mud Oven programming, management of all dough making)
– Collaboration with camp wide art/cooking programming
– Participating in and initiating camp sustainability initiatives
-Work with the Farm Manager to coordinate garden work specific activities such as harvesting, weeding, planting etc.
-Assist with animal chores
-Present for Family Camp programs
Desired Qualifications:
– Interest in participating on an organic farm of any scale in any capacity farming/educating
– Passion for outdoor education involving youth
– Willingness to work some weekends
-Enthusiastic about food – cooking, eating, preserving
-Excellent communication skills
-Ability to follow direction
-Ability to lift 30+lbs, squat, crawl, bend, and be on your feet all day in varied weather conditions
-Ability to start early-mid June 2023
