Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a small-scale diversified organic market garden growing vegetables. We implement human-scaled farming methods focusing on regenerative growing practices including minimal soil disturbance, composting, crop rotation, cover cropping and promoting biodiversity. We grow on about an acre and a half footprint affording us the ability to intensively and efficiently manage the land. Last season we added an additional greenhouse and high tunnel. Currently we have two greenhouses and eight high tunnels. These tunnels allow us to extend our season and focus on high-value trellised crops like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and leafy greens. We distribute almost all of our produce at our on-site farm market and roadside stand. The rest is donated to local organizations working to address food insecurity. The market garden is located on a 342-acre preserved farm in Long Valley, NJ. We hope to support the next generation of farmers through hands-on training and possible future low-cost land leasing opportunity on a 100-acre plot in development on our farm which would offer very affordable land access and shared infrastructure. The farm project was started by Dr. Weiss a primary care physician specializing in lifestyle medicine. We believe in a farm-based healthcare system, where health emanates literally, from the ground up. From the 2500-year-old Hippocratic teaching, farm-based healthcare recognizes that food is the most powerful medicine. These “living medicines” are the essential tools utilized by the lifestyle primary care physician to prevent and reverse the chronic diseases that plague our society today. Dr. Weiss sees patients at his medical practice located on the farm property.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Eager to get your hands dirty growing nutrient-dense organic produce for your local community? Live and work with us on an idyllic historic farm in a rural lush valley in northwestern New Jersey. Learn the ins and outs of small-scale regenerative vegetable farming complete with a beautiful bustling weekly market right on the farm. Housing, produce and monthly stipend included.
Motivated? Enthusiastic? Ready to work? We have two internships available for the upcoming growing season. Come join our small crew of three farmers who have been working together for several seasons. Interns will be provided the necessary training and instruction to be a successful and skilled member of a highly-productive farming operation. You’ll be AMAZED at how much food can be grown by a small crew on an acre and a half! Highly adaptable and eager candidates with a passion for learning will get the most out of the experience.
The work schedule is five days a week with a lunch break usually at noon. Typical workweek is 40 hours but some weeks may be more but not to exceed 50 hours. Interns will staff one of our farm markets per week which provides a great opportunity to engage with the community, closing the loop of the week’s hard work. We have two markets per week: Friday and Saturday. We rotate the staff to work a Saturday market every other week. During those weeks they will take a weekday off. This allows interns to keep a five day workweek. We believe in a farm-life balance!
Interns will be involved in most of the tasks needed to successfully run our market garden. This includes but not limited to seed starting, greenhouse management, bed preparation, trellising, cultivating, operating a BCS walk behind tractor, transplanting, seeding with our Jang mechanical seeder, irrigation, harvesting, wash/packing of vegetables and market staffing. Often interns will be working in a group with other farm staff members. We have a fast-paced work environment but we like to have fun too! Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. We hope to hear from you!
Educational Opportunities: As a farm crew member you will learn the ins and outs of an efficient small-scale market garden. We will share the overall systems that make us successful. Most of this will be done through direct hands-on experience. We will have a few scheduled farm discussions where we will go into more depth on related topics that the apprentices are interested in learning. These will range from soil health, crop fertility, crop planning, pest and disease management, farm finances and profitability and more. We encourage interns to connect with other farms and farmers through attending C.R.A.F.T. tours. This gives you the ability to learn from other growers and farm businesses. We usually attend a couple farm tours as a crew every season. We hope to host one this upcoming season!
Skills Desired: No farming experience is required but it is preferred. Similar work experience like landscaping, trail crew or construction is helpful. We are looking for people with a passion for growing food, community engagement, environmental and human health. A candidate must be adaptable and resilient with a desire to learn about regenerative growing practices. A person who is physically strong and fit with good communication skills and attention to detail will thrive.
Meals: No, but workers have their fair share of produce from the farm to eat. We also provide bulk staples like grains, legumes, oil, and spices to supplement the farm fresh veggies.
Stipend: Yes, $1,500 per month
Housing: Yes, housing is in a comfortable charming historic farm cottage. The space will be shared between the two apprentices. There are two private bedrooms upstairs, two full bathrooms and a living area, full kitchen and dining area downstairs.
