UWC-USA Agroecology Research Center Internship Program  

The United World College-USA is an international residential high school located in  Montezuma, NM that serves 240 students from over 90 nations. The Agroecology  Research Center (ARC) is UWC-USA’s school farm and Ecological Field Station.  Located on 20 acres along the Gallinas river, the ARC grows fresh vegetables for use in  the school dining hall, supplying over 7000lbs of produce each year. During the school  year, student farm crews work 5 days a week to run all aspects of the farm. During  summer break, the ARC relies on a farm fellow and interns working under the supervision of the Farm Manager to maintain  farm operations.  

UWC-USA is currently seeking one fellow and two interns to work for a 12-week period during the 2022  summer season from approx 5/23 – 8/15.  

Responsibilities  

• Under the supervision of the Farm Manager, engage in all growing activities,  including bed preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, irrigation and other  miscellaneous tasks  
• Tend to the chicken flock, including opening and closing each workday, making  sure food and water is available, and collecting eggs  
• Take full responsibility for all farm operations one day each week, to allow time  off for other team members  
• Communicate in a clear and timely manner about any issues impacting farm  work.  
• Fellow: Supervise interns in accomplishing the above 
• Fellow: Work five days a week, 6 hours a day for the full 12 week period 
• Interns: Work 5 days a week, 4 hours a day for the full 12 week period 

Qualifications  

• Previous experience with manual labor.  
• Previous experience working outdoors.  
• A joyful approach to work, and a constructive approach to problem solving.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.  
• Excellent references.  
• Fellow: Previous experience in sustainable agriculture

Compensation  

• Housing on UWC-USA’s Montezuma Campus, in a private room with access to  shared bathroom and kitchen facilities  
• Fellow: $15/hr plus housing, produce and eggs
• Interns: $12.50 plus housing produce and eggs
• Free high-speed wireless internet  
• Access to campus amenities (Laundry, Gymnasium, Library, etc).
• A dozen fresh eggs per week and a personal portion of all vegetable harvests. 

Expectations  

• Kitchen facilities must be kept clean at all times. Failure to do so may result in  loss of kitchen access or termination.  
• UWC-USA housing facilities should be treated respectfully and left in as good  condition as they were found. Any maintenance needs should be immediately  reported to the ARC Manager, who will report them to the Facilities Department  
• No smoking of any kind is permitted on the UWC-USA campus.
• Use of illegal drugs will result in immediate termination.  
• Alcohol consumption by persons of legal age is permitted in their personal living  space, in moderation. UWC-USA reserves the right to terminate individuals  whose drinking impacts the community or their work performance.  – No pets allowed on campus.  
• Interns must have their own transportation arrangements. UWC-USA cannot  provide transportation services to interns.  
• Throughout the summer, various programs may be running on campus, including  those involving minors. Interns are expected to behave professionally and  courteously around all summer program participants.
