Subtropical Soil Health Initiative

There is limited technical guidance available on cover cropping and organic methods in subtropical climates. Funded by a Conservation Innovation Grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Subtropical Soil Health Initiative (SSHI) studied the effectiveness, practicality, and profitability of cover crops and reduced tillage in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) conducted on-farm trials to identity best management practices that lead to healthier soils and more resilient farming. The project developed regionally appropriate recommendations and provided technical assistance to area farms, including more than 3,000 farms with Hispanic operators in South Texas, as well as other subtropical regions. Below are resources for using cover crops in subtropical areas.
