Register Now! Lambing Production Weekend with NCAT’s Linda Coffey

Join NCAT Livestock Specialist Linda Coffey, Heifer Ranch staff, and USDA Agriculture Research Service’s (ARS) Dr. Joan Burke for an information-packed weekend all about lambing production! This Lambing Weekend will take place April 12-14, 2019, at the beautiful 1,200 acre Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas. This event is the final in a series of four lambing production weekends offered by Heifer Ranch this spring.

About the Training

This weekend-long workshop is designed to deepen your knowledge of small ruminant production. Linda will give a talk about internal parasite management, based on her recent webinar Managing Internal Parasites: Outsmart the Enemy. She will also team up with Heifer USA’s Christine Hernandez to lead a discussion about livestock guardians. On Sunday, Linda will teach a session on whole farm planning.

Other topics covered during the weekend include:

  • Pasture management
  • Fencing and setup
  • Nutrition and body condition scoring
  • FAMACHA© scoring to select for barber pole worm treatment
  • Hoof trimming
  • Animal behavior and low-stress handling
  • Breeding and ram management
  • Lambing, including how to correct difficult presentations, what to do for lambs, jugging, and grafting
  • Sheep breeds and how to acquire sheep
  • Livestock guardian dogs

In addition, Dr. Burke, a Research Animal Scientist with the USDA ARS in Booneville, Arkansas, will speak about Animal Welfare Approved certification and becoming Certified Organic.

The weekend will include a mix of classroom and hands-on instruction, as well as a tour of Heifer Ranch and a pasture walk. Participants will receive copies of ATTRA Sustainable Agriculture publications to support the classes.
