On a beautiful day at the Iowa State Fair, August 11, NCAT Midwest Region staff visited with farmers and others interested in organic and sustainable farming, gardening and healthy food.
Midwest Office Director Ann Y. Robinson and NCAT Poultry Specialist Kevin Ellis shared a table with partners from the Iowa Organic Association (IOA) and Organic Valley, a cooperating sponsor. The organizations handed out educational materials from ATTRA, IOA and others, along with coloring books, seed packets from Seed Savers Exchange and coupons for Organic Valley dairy products.
“It was great to talk with so many farmers and beginning farmers from around the region who had questions on topics such as the organic certification process and raising soybeans and corn more sustainably, ” says Robinson. “I also appreciated the chance to listen and learn more about the increasing demand and premiums for organic products in our region from IOA President Roger Lansink, a long-time organic grain farmer from Odebolt, Iowa.”
IOA representatives and other partners will continue to meet with state fair visitors upstairs in the Agriculture Building through August 17. Find them next to the Iowa Honey Producers Association.
